George's Story

Life Although I was not a lifelong resident of West Memphis, I spent my last two years of High School at the NEW West Memphis High which opened in 1948 (my Junior year). My sister was in the first graduating class, Jean. We lived at 320 Barton St. and our driveway was opposite the walkway to the front door. Not very far to go. In my graduating class were some stellar West Memphis young ladies and young gentlemen. Although our class was very small, by todays standards, we were a very broad spectrum of what was right in school at the time. Some of these have continued to make their home in West Memphis, and notable among these were Martha Miller White Hemphill, who became a part of West Memphis High. I went to the Univ. of Ark. as a freshman, and then decided to forego further college and enlisted in the Air Force in July of 1951. I was discharged in 1955 and attended Memphis State College until the Fall semester and had an opportunity to join Delta Air Lines as a ground agent. I spent almost thirty years with Delta the last 25 as a Training Instructor for ground personnel and aspiring Supervisors and Managers. It was a lot of fun, but at age 52 I decided it was time to let the younger folks have their turn and I retired. Two months after retiring I was contacted by the Airport Authority in Memphis to write an Employees Handbook for their op...Expand for more
eration. Upon finishing this I was hired permanently to oversee the Landside Operation. I stayed with them for 8 years, but after gaining status as a member of Airport Executives Assoc. I again decided to let the younger folks have it. I have travelled extensively around the US and to the European area. During my Air Force career I had spent over three years in Italy with NATO, and have been back several times to visit some of the old "stomping" grounds. I am married (for over 50 years) and have three very grown children. The oldest graduated from UofMissouri and taught school for several years. He now writes for Scholastic, Inc. Our daughter, the middle child, is married and has one son. Her husband is Manager of the Childrens Hospital in Atlanta Rehabilation Program, and she is a registered and certified diabetic Nutritionist (freelance) and very involved with the establishing of certification for Olympic trainers. She also was an International Class swimmer and had made the Olympic team in 1980 but the US did not go to that Olympic games. Our 3d child is a Financial Advisor for University of Memphis. He has two children. Life is a transient and interesting opportunity to stretch onesself to the limits. Our main goal for now is to travel and enjoy our retirement years as much as we can. I hope everyone is having a great time also.
