Update: August 22, 2015 The profile shown above is stale - it hasn't been updated in maybe a decade or so. Consequently I am adding the following information. I am still ticking and am still working at the University of Washington Department of Comparative Medicine. However, the word "retirement" is now an important part of my vocabulary. Maybe by the 50th year reunion that word will be rewritten as "retired". Many things from the initial profile have not changed. However, I have pursued some adventures which certainly amaze me if nobody else. In 2009 I won a National Park Service lottery and was allowed to bring 35 people, mainly from the San Francisco Bay area Sierra Singles and a from a singles meetup group in Seattle, to spend a night on Alcatraz Island. Each year maybe 1,000,000 people tour this island on a day visit. Another 30,000 visit the place at night. But only 600 people get to spend an evening on the island sleeping in a 9 x 5 foot cell. In 2010 I spent two long weekends in British Columbia attending the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The events that I attended were: women's biathlon, men's luge (2 sessions), 4 man bobsled (2 sessions), and the closing ceremony. I enjoyed these games so much that I spent 16 days in London attending the 2012 Summer Olympic Games where I attended the following sessions: beach volleyball (2 sessions), sailing, whitewater kayaking, boxing, fencing, tae kwon do, rowing, flat water canoeing, volleyball, team handball, and shooting. Because so little of my time in London in 2012 was spent doing the typical tourist things I returned in 2014 and spent 18 days wandering around the city. During this time I to...Expand for more
ok a class on how to drive a 55 ton tank: In March 2016 I traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to participate in the 100 year anniversary celebration of the Easter Rising which is like Ireland's 4th of July. I did such things as: visited Kilmainham Gaol where the rising leaders were executed (it's one of Dublin's top tourist sites), attended a moving memorial service for the executed leaders, attended the Easter Sunday parade which draw about 1/2 million persons to the streets of the city. Then I went to Belfast and Derry, Northern Ireland, to see sites related to the Troubles of the 1960s - 90s which claimed 3,000 lives most of them innocent civilians. On the way back to the States I stopped over in Iceland where I drove a snowmobile on a glacier. All you could see was white. For more information go to travelark2.com and look up "GeorgeLondon". Updated May 2, 2016 I am now retired. One objective of my free time is to take classes at the U of Washington as an auditor to expand my knowledge about the world. Some of the classes that I have taken are: Global Heath, Microeconomics, Military History of the United States, America During the '60s, China in the 20th Century, Construction Management - Construction and Culture, Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare (I was the only non-Marine Corps ROTC midshipman taking this class which covered topics ranging from conducting an ambush to preparing for war against China and other near-peer nations). I visited London in 2016 and 2018 to participate in the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot celebration. For this I traveled to Lewes, about fifty miles from London, where five bon fire societies each ignited a huge bon fires and paraded through the town in period costumes. Also these two trips included two visits to the Cenotaph where the dead soldiers of World War I and other wars were honored by a moving ceremony (I have one of these recorded on my travelark2 page). In 2017 I traveled to Berlin, which is my birth city, and to Volgograd Russia aka Stalingrad. In Berlin I ate currywurst and toured the Stasi (East Germany secret police) prison, and in Stalingrad I visited the battle sites of what many consider to have been the most important battle of the 20th century. Unfortunately, my trip to Tokyo in 2020/2021 was cancelled. This would have been my 4th Olympic Games. Speaking of the Olympics I have enjoyed traveling to Whistler BC to take the fundamentals of bobsled piloting class. I have taken four runs, twice as pilot and twice as brakeperson down the Olympic ice track at a speed in excess of 70 mph. One drives through nine curves in 45 seconds; in one of the curves the sled is going so fast that its runners are perpendicular to the floor of the track for several seconds. Drop me a line if you are interested in following up with any of the activities that are mentioned in this report. Updated: June 28, 2021
