George's Story

After growing up in Petersburg and attending D M Brown, Robert E. Lee, Bolling Jr. High, and Petersburg High.I also worked at the Bluebird and Century Theater during the week and weekends. I moved to North Carolina in my sophmore year and finished school at Scotland High School in Laurinburg. Moved to Rockingham and started working in a boat building plant.I worked there for 19 yrs until they shut down in 1989. During that time I met my wife Paula with whom I've been married to for 37 yrs. Have 4 children,7 grand-kids and 3 great-grand kids.Had my house built in 1974. Have worked in N.C.,Ga,Fla.,and near the Outer Banks of N.C. Now I work in Wilmington, N.C. for a boat repair yard and Marina. Working supervisor in the Paint and Glass Dept. Commute 250 miles a day round trip.5 days a week. When I lived in Petersburg my dad and Uncle worked for The Glasspar Boat Company that was located in Colonial Heights, So I grew up around boats all my life . Even on weekends my dad would haul boats up and down the East coast and my brother David and I would go with him. So I've traveled from Maine to Fla. with him. Now I have started collecting and rebuilding old Glasspar Boats And I try to keep them as original as possible. The Profile pic has me standing next to a 1959 Glasspar G3 Speedboat and a 1965 Glasspar Tacoma that came from the Colonial Heights Plant. I also have a 1961 G3 that I have to rebuild. So I quess it was only natural for me to follow in his footsteps. I have built cruising sailboats ,racing sailboats, custom s...Expand for more
ailboats, sportfishing boats, runabouts, and have repaired boats from dingys to 200ft motoryachts. Well that's what I do for a living. Other than work the rest of the time is raising a family with all its joys and pitfalls. My wife and I have custody of 2 of our grand-kids, brother and sister age 9 and 11. both are hearing impaired and go to public school. So after a work day that starts at 3am and ends around 6pm. It's time to help out with the homework, that usually takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the studies. Anyway the girl is an A/B student and the boy is slightly behind but getting there. So my week is pretty much planned out. I do get back to Petersburg every now and then, just to see how the old place has changed. Have some pics from the last time I was there that shows how much the area around Central Park has deteriorated. That's the area that I grew up. The house that we lived in was only one of the few that still looked like it did in the 60's. It still had the shingles that my dad and uncle had to replace on the front of the house after we played baseball in the front yard and knocked all the shingles off the bottom three rows. The rest of the houses were in poor shape. Even after 40yrs of being gone I still miss the place. A whole lot of memories, good and bad, things that I didn't get to do and good friends that I haven't been able to keep up with. That's the reason I'm here to see if anyone remembers me because I can remember a lot of the ones that have signed up here. After all it's been 4 decades.
