Gerald's Story

Life This is my biography, as of August19,2023. After graduating from Lincoln High School in June 1963, I started working in a machine shop in Madison Heights, Michigan. I worked there for almost 6 months. I saw many of my friends and neighbors got drafted, so I enlisted in the United States Navy on January 31, 1964 for four years. I was in during the Vietnam War. I was a Non-Commissioned 3rd Class Petty Officer and my job was a Machinery Repairman on a Destroyer named U.S.S. William M. Wood DD715 out of Norfolk, Virginia. . It was my earlier years in the Metal Shop at Lincoln High School, that made me continue in this trade. After my enlistment on January 31, 1968, I attended Macomb County Community College and worked part time as a bartender for the Roostertail in Downtown Detroit. I was also hired my first month home by the S.S. Kresge company, which later became the Kmart Corporation on March 18, 1968. I was going to Macomb and working as a part time bartender and working full time for the Kresge Company. I was burning the candle at both ends but you can do that, when you are young and single. I started in the Management Training Program after three months I rose to become a Kresge Store Manager and eventually a Kmart Store Manager. I managed two Kresge stores and two Kmart stores, All of them were in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. After store management, I worked at the Kmart Distribution Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana for 8 years. I was a Merchandise Supervisor for rebuying merchandise for 12 distribution centers. I was transferred in 1991 to the Kmart Headquarters in Troy, Michigan. I worked at the Kmart Headquarters and had many upward positions. My last position was a Buyer for Pet Food and Pet Supplies. Kmart was filing for bankruptsy in January 2002, so after almost 33 years with Kmart, I took a Severance package and I retired in 2000. I took a year off and worked on my house and became bored, so I went to work for the Superpetz Company in 2001. I retired as a Store Director in Westland, Michigan in 2007. I stayed in the pet business because I love pets and was a Pet Buyer for Kmart. Superpetz has been very good to me. I divorced in 1987. I lived in Royal Oak Michigan for 15 years. I now live n Southfield, Michigan for the past 10 years. I graduated from Macomb Community College with...Expand for more
an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts in 1980. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Business and Management from Purdue University in 1992. I graduated with my Master's Degree in General Administration from Central Michigan in 1996. You never know, when you put your mind to work. I would have never thought of continuing my education, after graduating from Lincoln High School. I just wanted to get a job and start making some money but the United States Navy opened my eyes for me and helped me make the decision to continue my education. I have two motorcycles. One is a 1964 BSA Lightning Rocket, which I purchased from my Lincoln High School Classmate, Harry Nowicki. I purchased it in 1965 for $750.00, when I was home on leave from Norfolk, Virginia. You cannot believe what the BSA motorcycle is worth today. I rode the BSA in the Woodward Cruise for many years. The other motorcycle is a 2002 Harley Davidson Soft Tail Duece. I ride the Harley so I can preserve the BSA. My other hobby is Billiards or shooting pool. I did that a lot of that in my younger years growing up in Warren. I have 4 Tropical Birds. They are like children. I have 4 grown children and 3 grandchildren. Teresa, Gerald, Geoffrey, Jennifer and my grandchildren are Chase, Alayna and Landon. They live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Wilmington, North Carolina. I am heavily involved with the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). I started in 2006. I rose in the Ranks of the VFW to become a Post Commander, Macomb County Council Commander, District 5 Commander, State Commander of Michigan, Big Ten Conference Chairman and National Council of Administration Member 2019-2023 representing Michigan. I also was a Candidate for National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief 2023-2024. Today, I am the State Junior Vice Commander 2023-2024 for the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). I was elected in June 2023. One of My Greatest Memories is being a Poker Player in the Movie "Gran Torino" with Clint Eastwood on July 15, 2008, when I was the Post Commander of VFW 6756 in Center Line, Michigan. I got to spend the entire day with Clint Eastwood, Other Actors and Movie Workers. There much more to tell but this is enough. I hope this brief history and background of myself informs you of were I have been since graduating from Lincoln High School in June 1963.
