Gerald's Story
I did pretty much every job you could do from a very young age for not much money all the way up to high school, then joined the US Navy as an Electronic Warfare Technician for 6 good years, and even sometimes when I was at lower ranks and didn’t make much money again, so would work some part time jobs while we were in port to make a little extra money to support my family at the time! We lived in some terrible rentals filled with either flees or cockroaches! I couldn’t even afford to always change the oil filter when I changed the oil in our vehicle! That just made me want to work harder and study more so I would be more successful no matter what ship I was on! It was my job to protect the whole crew on the ship on both ships i served on! Once I got out of the Navy I worked at Adolph Coors Brewery in production stacking layer after layer of circuit boards to be fired in the kiln, I was told I probably would have been hired full time for 7.85$ an hour and then I decided I would try to work Christmas time at UPS as only a Christmas higher and would be laid off when I finished delivering my last package on December 24th! I had to find another job right away so I worked for an Oil Refinery as an Oil Blender for another low wage starting at 7.55$ an hour, I tried to make our work area look nice and clean always! aveyard and I had done it many times before while in the military! For all my hard work at the oil refinery I received a raise of.30 cents when we finally got a pay increase! I did also work some day shift! But no matter I was working graveyard shifts or day shift, I called UPS and asked if they had any work for me! At this same time we had some high school friend (Kelli Whitehall) and her husband at that time worked at Martin Marietta and was going to try to get me hired there in some kind of spaceship material job! I didn’t get hired at that moment! I kept sitting at home on my off time waiting and waiting for a phone call from either of them! Finally on July 14th, 1988 I received a phone call from both employers! I had to choose very quickly! I figured I was still young and strong at that time and thought I could do any physical job and I had seen the very nice cars & trucks at UPS while I had worked that Christmas time! I chose UPS! I drove a lot of not so nice cars for over half my time at UPS I finally started buying nice trucks and 1 new leased car which I ended losing anyway during one of my divorces! It seems I had a terrible life but I always kept pushing forward no matter what was thrown my way! Financially I’m better off retired than when I was working! Thank you for listening to my short story! God Bless 🙏!
