Gerald's Story
Graduated from Public School 43. And I enrolled in Shortridge's summer school immediately after grade school graduation and every summer session after that. I participated in Football, Wrestling, and some other including Baseball and Track and Field.
I was awarded multiple letter sweaters for Football and Wrestling.
Spring of 1965, I answered Ad in the Daily Echo daily newspaper for a job at Western Electric Distribution center. The following Monday after graduation, I reported to work at Western Electric an AT&T company.
In the fall of 1965, I enrolled at IUPUI as a parttime student. In December 1965, Uncle Sam changed my student status to 1A after my military physical. I believe others in our class had similar experience.
I enlisted in the Navy because several of my friends were already in the Navy under a 120-day delay option. May of 1966, I entered boot camp and became a first platoon Leader for having no cavities during our physical entrance exam. I was one of eight to be appointed to a class A school to become a Hospital Corpman or Medic.
After Corp school, I was married on December 9, 1966, to high school girl friend Sylvia McCann almost 57 years ago. Before going to my new station at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virgina working in an Internal Medicine ward.
In April 1967 was deployed to Field Medical Service School located at Camp Lejune, North Carolina ultimate detestation. 3RD Marine division, Okinawa. After FMSS training, I left for Viet Nam via Okinawa first of July 1967.
Arrived in Viet Nam on July 4, 1967 and I was attached to the second Battalion fourth Marine Division. The next day, I convoyed to camp Evans (to pick up combat gear) and joined Hotel company in the field.
Either at the end of August or first of September I had a hernia repair at a field hospital in Da Nang. Believe it or not, classmate Huber Hopson provided my post operation care.
Shortly after returning from the hernia repair, the 2/4 battalion rear was relocated further north to the Quang Tri River.
