Gerard's Story

You can contact me at jerryhauck on GMX dot com I'm not much of a writer, but I'll jot down a few memories from high school and college. --------------------------------------- High School Memories Making friends at lunch over pieces of cardboard with sauce and cheese on them, ... which made it easier to fast and donate our lunch money to the starving children in Biafra. Duper Day! (obscure reference to a day marked by eating many "Duper" ice cream sandwiches) Intramural basketball and bowling. Student protests that resulted in our being chained inside the auditorium, ... followed by a morning where students chained the gates at "the top of the hill" shut. Religion classes that ranged from,"Up on your pegs Beelzebub", .... to a more sedate approach that included listening to folk music like Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and pondering life with Brother Joe Freddie. Driver's Ed. Lake Varley (the water that collected between the school and the cemetery after a good rain). Saving carfare by hopping freight trains on Cooper Avenue and then walking through the cemetery to the back of the school. Finding a supplier for shirts with very very low collars, when the rules called for hair not to reach our collars. Ben the Hen (the bookstore/lounge, named after a peacock, who spent some time showcased in the window of the bookstore and lived in a brownstone in Brooklyn), ... dropping a quarter in the jukebox when leaving "Ben The Hen", to play Yoko Ono singing "Why?" to the great dismay of all those remaining behind. And if you don't like all that, ... you can meet me at "the top of the hill" after school and we will sort it out. ----------- College Memories Meeting more interesting, friendly, good hearted and sometimes confused people, from around the world; sharing our thoughts and new experiences. Meeting on "the hill" did not mean that you were preparing for battle with someone, as it did in high school. Instead it was a time to talk with friends, play guitar, listen to Marvin play the flute, ... and on rare occasions, study. Unfortunately, I have lost touch with most of the friends from that time of my life, but still have nice memories of them and send out good thoughts to those wonderful people. The Internet and social sites like this now make it possible to look up lost friends. However, I find in most cases that too much time has passed, and that memories that are clear and vivid to me, may have been minor ...Expand for more
fleeting background events in the lives of others. Some do not want a reminder, preferring to forget those days and keep the past behind them ... while still others are guarded, assuming that you either want to sell them something or that you are looking for a mid life booty call. Well that being said, I am sending my good thoughts and vibes out to all the friends whose influences have become a part of me, wishing them all the best. Some memories include .... Glenn (still riding a motorcycle?), Red, Al, Mike, Loren, Bruna, Gail, Mindy, Claire V.(thank your Mom for the NyQuil), Fiddle, John, Marvin (thanks for the music), Kathie C. (thanks for encouraging me to take a job that took me out of New York), Mike (thanks for turning me on to Lou Reed's Rock 'n Roll Animal and your photos of ELP) ...... Sasha, Eddie, Peggy, Yolanda, Millie, Laurie, Bob S. and many more than I have time to write about at this time. I hope everyone is doing well enjoying good health and happiness. ----------------- Queens College brought new experiences with friends from around the world. And while I am in touch with a few friends, I do not see them often enough and again there are others that I have lost track of altogether, even though they are still in my heart and mind. ----------------- Now I am hobbying with two small websites themusiclocatordotcom, and haucksart dot wix dotcom/gerard (do not add 3 w's in font) The aim of The Music Locator website is to help people locate hard-to-find music and to match people who are looking for a recording with someone trying to sell the same. (This year's recommended musicians are Chuck Brodsky for Folk music with a message and Girlieman for great harmonies) Other hobbies include black & white (and more recently color and digital ) photography, linocuts, etching, casting, gardening, concert going and art gallery hopping. I still lose track of time when I have a camera in my hands and can take hundreds of pictures in one outing, observing the different aspects of a leaf, stick, cloud, stream or waterfall. In other words don't go for a walk in the woods with me when I have my camera. Trying my luck in the art world I have started to post a few of my many pictures and a couple of art pieces at haucksartdotwixdotcom/gerard ( it does not use the 3 w's in front) If you have time and the inclination, please check them out and fell free to give me constructive criticism. Bye for now. Take care.
