I've had a bit of contact with a few people on this site and it's great to get back in touch with back home and the past.
After graduating grade 12 at age 17 I went to The Netherlands to play pro hockey there. We were Dutch champions five years running and I got to see much of Europe including Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, England, Italy, Yugoslavia and Spain during our European Cup adventures. Our best result was losing out to CSKA Moscow (with the famous KLM line) in the semi-finals in 1980. My biggest claim to fame is hitting the post against Tretjak during an exhibition game of the Dutch national team vs. Team Russia (CCCP) in 1979.
In 1985 I lost sight in my left eye as a result of a hockey injury which shortly thereafter ended my career.
In the mean time I had married and had two daughters, Jaimey and Jacy. When I divorced in 1986 I got sole custody of the girls and went back to school. After a year of college it became apparent that I wasn't going to cut it because I was having too many problems with the language on this higher level. In 1995 we had a daughter of our own, her name is Jesse.
When I got laid off in 1998 I went back to school again. In 2000 I took a job as a software engineer, but sitting in an office is not for me so in 2003 I gave it up to go back to my first occupation that I also held as a summer job all through high school, carpentry. I have plans to leave my current employer shortly and have a stab at setting up my own handyman business.
I'm going to stay in Holland at least until retirement I think. Then I plan on taking it easy in Canada. We have two cats that we caught as kittens out in the wild in France during a couple of our vacations. We have a PT Cruiser and a Virago 1100 and I'm in the process of getting my '73 Plymouth Scamp back on the road.
We love our vacations and take in a week of skiing in Austria and three weeks on the boulevard in the south of France each year. We've also been to Ontario with all the kids for a complete summer vacation twice and for a fall vacation once, but the last time was almost eight years ago now. We really should do it again soon.
The girls are all growing up too fast and the three oldest are out of the house already. We still have a 17 year old and a 9 year old at home and really enjoy spending time with them.
