Geri's Story

Jeff (Lewis) and I moved to Bucks County PA in 1967 and I am still here. We have 3 kids, 5 grandkids...all nearby. Jeff passed away July 20, 2009 after a long illness. Since the kids are nearby I am staying put. Jeff and I started dating in 1961 so I am not starting a new "chapter" in my life but a new volume. We were together a lot of years. Before he died we had started discussing old high school memories. Then with the funeral, the kids and I went through old pix and put together a montage of our life together. A lot of years. A lot of memories. Life has moved on. I am still in the house we purchased in 1977....an 1880's victorian farmhouse. I love old houses. Thought about moving but don't like new houses, don't want a condo or a townhouse or to live in a development. If I could, I would live on a mountain on a zillion acres of land. However, I guess I would also want a helicopter or some other way of getting to shopping/people on occasion. And that is not going to happen anytime soon!! What I did over the past 50 yrs: As I mentioned above Jeff and I moved to PA in 1967 after he graduated from Post. He had been offered a job with US Steel, I was a stay at home housewife. We eventually had 3 kids: 2 girls, 1 boy. The kids live nearby. When we moved to PA it was like moving to another planet...it was so different from GN!! We adapted and learned to love it. Because we married young, I did not go to college at a traditional age. When our youngest went to 1st grade, i started college. Me being in school while my children were in school made it very hard for them to complain about too much work or how hard the courses/teachers were. An added benefit to being a...Expand for more
n adult student. LOL. I got my associates degree when my oldest got her high school diploma. Then got my law degree when the 2nd child graduated college and the 3rd graduated high school. Lots of graduation parties that summer!! Worked for roughly 20 yrs and then retired in 2011. Looking back over the past 50 yrs or so, I would not change much. At least not the big things. I loved being a stay at home mom. The kids were good and were reasonable students. We often took mental health days off from school and went to the beach on lovely spring days. Working after my kids were grown made it easier to focus on work issues.....did not have to worry about babysitters/daycare. Since I started working after the expensive years of raising kids were over, I could be selective about where I worked, if I worked. I had a lot of freedom. I am starting to do volunteer work again. While I was a stay at home housewife, I was involved in a lot of volunteer projects. Once I started working, I had to let that slide. Now I have the time to start helping others again. For a variety of reasons, I have focused on veteran issues/projects. I get to live in a safe, good country and am able to pick and choose what I want to do with my life. These things are possible because many men and women are willing to serve our country and they put other countries, that might to do us harm, on notice that we will fight back. I never even remotely considered the possibility of being in the military yet I have benefited in every aspect of my life because someone else not only considered it but signed up. Whatever i can do to pay back that debt in some small way makes me feel better. Life is good.
