Gerry's Story

Life I am divorced and live alone in an apartment in Korea, where I teach English at a university. I enjoy living a quiet, simple life in an apartment provided by the university. I speak Korean and enjoy studying Korea's language and history in my free time. l get my exercise by walking, jogging, and sometimes hiking. I do not own a car and do not see any need to buy one here since the public transporation is quite good. The best thing about my job is that it gives me two months paid vacation in the summer and two in the winter. I usually spend some of my summer vacation back home in Texas and my winter vacation in the Philippines. These days I have been thinking a lot about retirement even though I am not yet financially ready to retire. I have been thinking about buying a condo on the Philippine island of Boracay, which is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth, but then I have also been thinking about moving back to Texas to be near family and to live in the familiar surroundings of the town I grew up in. I often imagine myself starting each morning with a brisk walk on Boracay's long white powdery beach that would end with a swim in the island's cool, crystal-clear waters. The windows of my apartment would always be open so that the cool sea breeze could flow through. I would buy fresh fruit from the vendors that pass under my window and meet friends for long, leisurely lunches in a cool, open-air restaurant. In the late afternoon, I would sit on my balcony and wait for the beautiful blue sky to change to a soft, orange glow while sipping a cold drink. After dinner, I would sit down in a comfortable chair with a good book and read until I am tired. Then I would get into bed and let the so...Expand for more
unds of the tropical night sing me to sleep. If I meet a woman and fall in love again, I think the routine would be pretty much the same, except I would probably go to bed a little bit earlier in the evening. School I did not enjoy high school, probably because I was too shy and withdrawn. It is one of the few things in my life that I regret, but I would still not want to go back and do it all over again. I do wish I had studied harder in school, starting from the first grade, because there are just too many things to learn in life. By goofing off so much in my first twelve years of education, I have had to spend most of my adult life just trying to catch up. College I studied Korean Language and Literature at the University of Hawaii (UH). After graduating from UH, I came to Korea to study more of the language and to work. In 1987, I went back to Texas and got an MBA from West Texas State University. Even though I got a degree in business, I realized during the process that I was not a businessman. After graduating, I came back to Korea and started working as a Korean translator. After two years of translating, I realized that I did not like doing that kind of work, either, so I started teaching English and have been doing that ever since. Military I served four years in the US navy, where I worked as a Korean linguist. The experience not only helped me get over my shyness, but it also changed the direction of my life. Since then I have spent most of my life living overseas, mainly in Korea. I do not know if I would have had a better life in the United States, but my life in Korea has been interesting. I have not had as much success in life as I thought I would, but I have had enough to be satisfied.
