Gerry's Story
After getting my Master's in History at the University of Saskatchewan, I spent four years studying in London at King's College. I came back to Canada with a Ph.D. and two lovely daughters, teaching at the U of S and U of Regina. In 1983 my wife Karen got a job in the School of Music at the University of Manitoba and off we went to Winnipeg where we have been based ever since and where we added a third daughter. I taught History at a number of colleges and spent 25 years at the University of Manitoba where I shifted my research interests from Tudor England to the social history of Christmas. In 2014 I left the University of Manitoba to begin writing historical mysteries. Look for my paperbacks in the marked-down bin at Costco. "Christmas in the Cross-Hairs: 2,000 Years of Condemning and Defending the World's Favourite Holiday", came out in October 2016 from Oxford University Press and I published a collection of my shorter pieces in "The Kindly Curmudgeon: All Kinds of Writings from an Ink-Stained Life".
I am now a Senior Fellow for a think-tank, the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, and working on projects relating to the culture wars and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
