Gerry's Story

Life Since Northeastern University graduation in 1981, I have moved to California, camped, climbed rocks, skied and paddled whitewater, 20-40 weekends per year. I was married after 7 years of dating and co-habitation, and then divorced after 4 years of marriage. We had no children, and working then with severe special-needs students and now 200+ middle school students, I have not felt the need for my own. Taking up mountaineering after moving to CA, I have ascended the 3rd and 5th highest peaks in North America, Popocatepetl (17,700') and Orizaba (18,800', now considered an ACTIVE volcano) in the Mexican volcanoes. I have also climbed technical rocks and ice at reasonably skilled levels, and have spent multiple days on wall climbs in Zion NP, Utah. I take a week every Winter to climb ice in Ouray, near Telluride, CO. In the last few years, I have been identified by Native Americans as a potential Medicine Person, and have undertaken visionary and transformational dances as part of that process. Having survived motorcycle and car crashes, long climbing falls and the like, it seems that perhaps I have been saved for some other purpose. It's quite the interesting gig. College I took a moratorium from education for a year, following HS. I worked in a leather tannery as a carpenter, to make $$ to attend college. I put myself through Northeastern University, at quite a steep expense. Our good ol' Guidance Counselor, never told me that should an education program not be available in NH, then the State would pay for tuition elsewhere in New England, reducing my expenses to the State University costs for in-state students. ld have saved tens of thousands that took me 10+ years to pay off following my graduation. When I first arrive in Boston, the Residence Director of my dorm yells, "Cox? You're rooming with Kuntz!" (no kidding) My Mom turned on her heel and departed for Derry. All year, my roommate and I had a great time introducing ourselves as "Cox & Kuntz." With the 18 year old drinking age still in effect, the local Cask & Flagon was across the street from the University was our watering hole. We had contests to swipe mugs and pitchers, and once even staged a fight, in order to divert attention and swipe a TABLE! With finances sometimes sketchy, it took me 6 1/2 years to complete a 5-year program for my Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Those were some of the days, and I'm glad I had the energy to do it all then, as I know I haven't that much energy now. Workplace I went to college to study Athletic Training, but was deflected toward SPED in my flexibility to be graduated AND find employment. I followed a woman to California, found a teaching job in SPED, first in Palos Verdes, then in Long Beach. For 15 years, I had the most severely involved students, both physically and mentally. For the last 6 years, I've been assigned to teach Physical Education to 6th-graders, in an urban (read, "ghetto") setting. I'm looking forward to eventually being assigned top Long Beach's Outdoor Science School in the San Gabriel mountains North of Pasadena; the same ones you see in the background of the Rose Parade. Military I was never in the military. It was quite scary enough, to be in the last year of the military draft for the Viet Nam War.
