Gerry's Story
Workplace
Originally from New Jersey, I moved to Palm Bay in 1988 after graduating from Glassboro State College with a degree in Technology Education. I soon married my high school sweetheart, Maryanne, and began my career in education.
I began working in Brevard Public Schools in 1989. I started as the Drafting teacher at Satellite High School. After teaching two years of Drafting, I moved into my new Technology Education lab that I designed based on a district grant for $110,000.00. I taught the Technology Studies class in that lab until 1996 when I became the full-time Technology coordinator for Satellite. I began my dual roll as Technology Teacher and Technology Coordinator in 1993 when Satellite won a $237,000.00 State Retrofit grant to network the school for voice and data. I was charged with purchasing, setting up and maintaining all technology (computers, networks, telephone system, website, etc.) throughout the school while I was still teaching full time.
While at Satellite, I earned the state-wide recognition for having the best Technology Education program in Florida and was honored in Charlotte, NC by the International Technology Education Association....Expand for more
In 1997, I formed the first Brevard County F.I.R.S.T. robotics team by teaming up with Merritt Island High School, NASA, McDonnell Douglas Corporation ,EG&G Florida, I-NET, United Space Alliance, and Florida Tech (FIT). Our students and team traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire; New Bruswick, New Jersey; Houston, Texas; Orlando, Florida; and the Kennedy Space Center for competitions and events. I continued to run F.I.R.S.T. teams until 2000. Brevard County now has about 5 active F.I.R.S.T. robotics teams.
In 2000, I transferred to Suntree Elementary School to become their Technology Specialist and TV Productions instructor. I maintain all aspects of technology from computer workstations, to network resources, school website, telephone system, audio/video resources, and anything else that looks, smells, or tastes like technology. I also sponsor our TV Productions activity. Our 6th grade students produce and broadcast a school news show that we call SunNews. I was honored as Suntree's 1994 Teacher of the Year.
I am a founding and continuing member of the district's Technology Advisory Committee. I also serve on the district's Technology/Media Specialists Committee.
