Gerry's Story

Life Ever since I moved from Houston to New Mexico in 1975, I’ve missed being by the water. I spent a lot of years there surfing, fishing and water skiing. To compensate, almost all of my vacations have been to the Caribbean or the Florida Keys. I don’t surf anymore, but I got into scuba diving. I like the US and British Virgin Islands because so many other islands are nearby. The St Martin area is the same way with British, French and Dutch islands within a short ferry ride. School I went to Spring Woods for my Jr High years. I was in a band called The Profiles. We did alot of Beatles and Beach Boys. We mostly played parties out in the Cy-Fair area where our bass player and cousin Mike Butts was from. The other members were Jimmy Massey (drummer) and Kent Hill (lead guitar). Our 15 minutes of fame was playing at the Cy-Fair 8th grade prom. My 1st girlfriend was Beth Rodgers, also from Cy-Fair, who I met at that prom. We kept in touch for many years after that. I went to Spring Woods HS for my freshman year, then transferred to Westchester HS. I continued to keep friends from Spring Woods. My girl friend for most of high school, Cheryl Owens, was from Spring Woods. Throughout Jr and high school, I surfed a lot. Charlie Barnes was my surfing buddy from Westchester HS and David Pfardresher from Memorial HS. Charles McKnight was also a good friend. My favorite HS teacher was my Humanities teacher, Ms. Witte. She was good about exposing the class to different modes of thinking. I remember her shocking the school authorites by havin...Expand for more
g the Children of God, who were camping out in Bear Creek Park at the time, come to class and show us what they were about. I think she may have gotten in trouble because a couple of students got converted, left school and joined their commune. She didn't return the next year to teach. I really enjoyed her as a teacher. College I attended North Texas State Univ in Denton TX as a chemistry major from '70 - '72. Friends at NTSU were Randy Willis, David Beinke and Wayne George. Then, I went to Univ of Houston for half a semester before leaving because I really didn't know what I wanted to do and was burned out from studying too hard. My girlfriend for most of my NTSU years was Beki Rolon. I worked in construction for awhile, then returned to school at Baylor Univ in Waco in '73. Having a more relaxed view of life and studies made the rest of my college time much more enjoyable. I met my now ex-wife at Baylor. I graduated in Dec '75 with a BS in Chemistry and started working for Kerr-McGee Nuclear in Grants NM. I've been in New Mexico ever since. Workplace After graduating from Baylor in '75 with a BS in Chemistry, I worked at Kerr-McGee Nuclear in Grants, New Mexico for 7 years as a chemist. When the uranium industry went under in '83, I started working for the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos New Mexico, just north of Santa Fe. I've been there for 25 years now working in nuclear waste management Was married to Denise Williams in 1975 and 2 children, Melissa and Chris. Divorced in 1989. Remarried 2002 to Susan Christman.
