Gery's Story
Life
I'm married to Linda Radcliff of Lawton Oklahoma - and have been since December of 1966. We have two sons, Matthew and Seth. Both are married and each has a son and daughter so that makes me a Grandfather four times over <sigh> ( never thought I'd be proud to say I was a Grandfather ) :) Being a Civil Engineer and General Contractor / Developer has it's rewards as well as head aches. I have built everything from single family homes to Wal-Marts and Railroad Spurs. Being the Munich American High shop superintendent in my Junior and Senior year and working on the props for the school plays seemed to stick with me and moved me along the construction path.
School
I guess I should have worked a little harder in school. I found class work very boring and hated to do homework as well. Spent most of my time working out ways to skip class and go to the Deutsches Museum or just wander around McGraw Kassern. Mr. Agnew was my favorite teacher because I loved Shop.
Siggie Filoon and Jay Hallek along with Bill Henry and the Barnes brothers were my best friends - all from Dachau. Bob Parry was my best friend from the Chiemsee Platz residential area. A little red haired girl lived just one floor below me in Dachau - her name is Judy Lashley - I'd have to count her as "the one that got away" - ----
College
After my stint in the Army, I used the GI Bill to go to college. Started with the University of Maryland, European Divisi...Expand for more
on. Continued at Cameron College in Lawton, Oklahoma where I had joined the Police Department as a Patrol Officer so I could work from 4 PM to midnight or from midnight to 8 AM thereby having days free for school. After Junior College we moved to Kansas where I continued my education at Wichita State University. I now have a BS in Civil Engineering and a Masters in International Business.
Military
Joined the Army right out of High School and on Friday the 13th of July 1962 in Munich, Germany - flew to Ft. Dix New Jersey for Basic and Ft. Gordon, Georgia for Advanced training. There were a few other specialized military training schools thrown in as well. Graduated at the top of the class so they made me an instructor <sigh> I hated that so I applied for a transfer to Germany. As I am fluent in German, the Army, in its infinite wisdom sent me to France and then to a few other places where I didn't speak the language but made an "ideal German tourist" - During my stint in the Army, my favorite assignment was at Bad Tolz and Flint Kasern - home of 10th Special Forces at that time.
As an Army Brat, I had no idea that there were actually other ways to make a living - thought I had my career all lined out as a Soldier till I started talking to guys in my unit. They informed me that it was actually possible to survive out from under the protective and benevolent arms of Uncle Sam. I took a chance and found that was true.
