Gilda's Story
Life.
In my young life I spent my years traveling to many schools as my dad was a foreman or superintendent of Highway Construction with Granite Constr. Co and others. We didn't settle down until I was in 7th grade. At times I spent 4th, 5th or 6th grades at least twice at other schools. I was a construction brat! From Branciforte Jr High thru Santa Cruz High I attended all in Santa Cruz. I met and married a local man with 2 young sons who made up our family. Don was born and spent most of his younger life in Santa Cruz. I worked and retired from the telephone company, first with PT&T then Pacific Bell who we know now as AT&T. My teenage years were either spent as a baby sitter, picking berries or fruit in Napa to working for the Whiting Family at the boardwalk along with some of my other classmates. A great and fun job on the SC Beach and Boardwalk.
I retired from work in 1985 and when Don from class of "48" retired from being an auto mechanic, we moved up to Sacramento area with my sister, brother-in-law and my niece. We spent a season working for California State Parks and Recreation working up at Lake Oroville as Campground Host's. It was a fun job for me and I met lots of people who came in to the campground. We were asked by our Ranger friend to go to Burney Falls...Expand for more
and from Plumas National Forest who wanted us to take a couple jobs with them but my husband started having problems while we were in Sacramento and after his 7 bypass so we didn't continue. We did get a nice write up in the Sacramento Bee for our Host Job. We ventured up to Quincy above Chico where we had family and stayed 13 years. More of Don's health problems got us to move to lower elevation to Brookings Oregon where I live now. Don passed away in winter of 2010. I'll have my mobile home up for sale again soon and will move to Reno, Nevada....yep, gonna be a cowgirl! :-) I still enjoy communication with my family, classmates and friends, arts and craft projects and I can't wait to return to my camera, the one that takes film and slides :-) I don't like my digital!
