Gina's Story

Look for me at f a c e b o o k. You can contact me there for free. I married Joe Kirkland ('85 Derry grad) in '88. We divorced in 2007 after 7 years apart, amicably. We have 2 daughters, Rhiannon (born '88) and Alexis (born '96). I went to IUP for a bit, went to WCCC to be a Medical Laboratory Technician, then went to UPG for Biology. I was a lab tech from 1992 through 2016, then I moved into IT and began supporting laboratory and radiology software applications. I am currently a Cerner subject matter expert contractor for PathNet and RadNet applications. I had returned to college at Winston Salem State to complete a BS in Clinical Laboratory Science, right after I moved into the IT world. I moved to the Charlotte, NC area in May 2004, then bought a house on Easter Monday 2005. I married Mark Anderson of Monroe, NC in April 2007 in Las Vegas at the Bellagio fountains. We sold the house around 2016 and moved to Asheville, NC, then we hit the road traveling in 2022 after he retired and I'm living the life of a digital nomad. School You know, I moved around a lot and attended 6 different schools between 7th and 12th grade. I don't remember 3/4 of the people that I graduated with, because I only attended Derry for 2 years...and Latrobe 2 years before that...and Obuch in Antlers, Oklahoma a year before that...and West Hempfield the year before that...and Jeanette before that. The point is, the only people I really remember are a few from the musical (Mame) or the boys track team, since we didn't have a girls team yet. I remember a few people I regularly sat with at lunch. Here's a few of the most memorable moments... Bringing tears to Mrs. Calvo's eyes when I sang the solo for "Coventry Carol" at the Christmas concert. Keeping a journal and doing real experiments for Mr. Ebersole for Experimental Psych. I remember he gave us until midnight to turn in papers that were due without deducting points. I took one to his house and saw through his window that he was asleep on the sofa in the living room with school papers all over his floor. I didn't want to wake him up, so I went to the gas station below his neighborhood, got him some Slim Jims and a can of Jolt and left them with my paper at his front door. He is probably the teacher who had the greatest impact on me. I was very sad to read his obituary a couple of years later. I remember making crazy dance-style swooping motions with my fingers in the air in Mrs. Elder's shorthand class...I thought it would be good for note-taking in college. I never used it again. I remember Mrs. Gundy's Spanish class in the room above the auditorium...very isolated little room. I remember racing down the hall from the cafeteria to the gym with Joe Demangone (forgive me if I have the name wrong - the yearbooks are put away) or was it Dave Novello???...his sweats were falling off his ass and my boobs were flopping all over the place and Mr. Livingston (did anyone ever understand what that man was saying???) was laughing so hard, he was almost crying. By the way, WON that race! ;-) I remember all the guys in track were calling me "pear" too - look guys, it's cool, and I hold no grudges. I remember the smoke ROLLING out of the girls' bathroom closest to the principal's office. I never did get that. I remember hearing "cowabunga" one too many times in French class. I remember listening to "Imagine" by John Lennon and Mrs. Lynch (?) drawing huge diagrams and words on the blackboard in exaggerated time with the ...Expand for more
song. She gave bonus points for a summary paper about the current episode of 60 minutes each week. I remember Mrs. Werner's "American Short Stories" and "Shakespearian" classes and how fun and interesting she made them. I remember her even commenting on how the short stories class was abbreviated on our schedules as "American Sht Stories". I remember never learning anything constructive in Mr. Gourley's art class because he would leave us with a project to go to the teacher's lounge or other place for a smoke break or something...nice guy though. I wish it would have been a more serious art class. At least I could get my homework done in there. I never had Mr. Perla as a teacher, but I know he was a really cool guy back then. My daughter is actually the same age as his son - that's kinda weird to be attending parent functions with him there as a fellow parent and not a teacher. I remember thinking the courtyard was really cool - if they would ever let anyone into it during the day just to hang or eat lunch. Now there is hardly any courtyard left since the school was remodeled for the middle school. I kinda had a little thing for Kevin Love. I'm confident that he knew that, but he played the VERY uninterested role. Tom Farabaugh was a cutie - he hooked up later on with my foster sister, Jodie Farkas. Mike Petrunyak was a very sweet guy - sat across from me in homeroom. I hope I got these names right - It's been a really long time. LOL College I roomed with Tamie Schaefer for one year at IUP. I got married the summer after that year and commuted from home. IUP was ok. In some ways it was great and in other ways I hated it. I think I hated the immaturity of some people, and I hated the attitudes of some of the profs toward students - they probably earned those attitudes by dealing with the immature students that I disliked so much. I pledged Kappa Delta sorority. I loved it! There were no sorority houses allowed in Indiana, PA at the time, so they had suites in the basement of my dorm. I lived in the Tri-Halls - right in the corner room of Stewart Hall where it joined Turnbull - 3rd floor. Anyway, my sorority had 2 houses near the student union that had 5 girls in each - "unofficial" sorority houses. I hung out there often the second semester. They later lost their charter due to low membership and financial problems. :-( I later went to WCCC - originally for nursing. I tested into the nursing program, but after taking an Into MLT course, I decided I liked the lab setting better. I had more education than a nurse and made half the money, but I really loved my job and I didn't have to touch people, so I guess it was a fair trade-off. I started on a Bio degree from UPG, and within 2 years, moved to Charlotte. I eventually got a supervisory role in a hospital lab and returned to college to finish my degree. Right before graduation, I moved up in the world and pay to become a lab information systems analyst in IT. Now I am an independent contractor and work maybe 6 months of out the year. That gives me the freedom to travel and work from almost anywhere. I can't say that I miss Southwestern PA too much. I don't really have any close family left in PA, but I do travel to Pittsburgh and Philly for concerts or special events occasionally. I don't pay for this site, so I probably won't be able to read your messages. Please, if you want to contact me, I do have a page at f a c e b o o k. Just look for "Rugito". You'll find me.
