Ginger's Story

You might remember me as "Paul" but I'm now Ginger Marshall. After graduation my family moved to Atlanta. I stayed for the summer then joined the Navy. They trained me to be a Hospital Corpsman, I worked in several clinics and in the operating room, attaining the rank of HM2. I did boot camp in Orlando, then was stationed in San Diego, then in Pensacola, then back to San Diego, and finally to Charleston SC. My daughter was born in '82, I left the Navy in late '85 when I became a single parent - active duty did not work well in that situation. I worked in insurance for a number of years, then became an auditor for a retail tool chain. My daughter was grown, and I was on the road almost constantly. During a reorganization I was part of a department that was down-sized. I took my package and went to school so I could return to patient care. I worked in several hospitals and clinics in Georgia. My husband, Carter, was born and raised in Georgia, but spent a decade in Boston and loved the northern city and climate. He had moved back to Georgia when his father was very ill, and when we met he was ready to leave again. I dreaded the hot Atlanta summers and missed real fall weather and snowy winters. We finally decided to make a big move and after some research we picked Cleveland. We ended up on the west side and are...Expand for more
very happy. When we arrived I was a supervisor at a large skilled nursing and assisted living facility for three years. Two years ago I started teaching part-time and loved it. I have always liked to teach skills and concepts, since my days training new cooks at the Painesville Perkins Cake-n-Steak. I started teaching Patient Care, added Phlebotomy, and then EKG. I wrote a new Phlebotomy textbook for the school and am in the process of writing a new Patient Care program. In December of last year I was promoted to Faculty Coordinator. I am also involved in diversity work and training healthcare workers about caring for patients who are transgender or gender diverse. I've addressed classes in the Nursing School at Emory University in Atlanta, and here in Cleveland have addressed Medical Students at the Case school of medicine, as well as students in various classes at Tri-C. I've also spoken about transgender issues at various seminars and conferences. Carter and I are developing curricula and material that meet the latest standards to formally train healthcare workers in this area. Carter is a graphic designer and artist. We live in Brooklyn on the west side, and have two little dogs that like to bark. Currently, we're big fans of "Agents of Shield" and the Netflix shows "Sense8" and "Orange is the New Black."
