Ginny's Story

Where did the time go? That 25th reunion seemed like a milestone, and here we are at 37 years since high school. My youngest child will be a senior this fall. Somedays I have to look in the mirror to remind myself I am not a youngster anymore. In fact, my husband is looking forward to retirement in a few years, and I left my career years ago. After school, I was a social worker for Jewish Family Service in Kansas City, worked for B'nai B'rith Youth Organization in Miami(Ruthie Cantor hired me- that was a deja vu), became an educator for Planned Parenthood in Monterey, Ca. and then moved to Charlotte, N.C. so my husband could work for First Union. I lost the thread of my professional life after following him around the country, and finally stayed home to schlep the kids to their various after-school activities. Now I volunteer at our synagogue and serve on the board of the Reform Judaism Mid-Atlantic Region. o talk politics,go dancing, and of course, cater to our children's needs. Our son is 21, our daughter is 17. He is more like me- quiet unless with friends, funny in an understated way, but my daughter inherited the radio personality of her dad- she has been a great deal of fun to raise. I feel very blessed that my kids are healthy and well-adjusted- not like me at all! Maybe it was the times we grew up in, but I felt alot of despair in my teens. Of course it was probably my DNA too. I blossomed when I went off to the University of Wisconsin- felt free to try new things and create a different persona for myself. So here I am at another crossroad- soon to be empty-nester, facing a husband who will be retired, not sure what the next step will be. We own a house on the Panhandle of Florida, and perhaps we will move there. I imagine myself sitting in my rocker, on the front porch, in a cotton house dress that snaps down the front. Volunteering to save the turtles or setting out bowls of food to feed the stray cats. At any rate, I hope I've given you a glimpse of my life. If any of you are near by, or even not, but this resonates somehow, let me know.
