Glen's Story

Hello Class of "78" & other friends Early Summer - 08 Just wanted to place a few words down to give a quick peep of where I'm at these days. Where has the time gone? I can recall Ms. Maeder (sp) (I'll leave out the childish unflattering descriptive words previously used by myself and circle of friends in our younger years) had asked us to write a page in class on where we thought we would be 20 years from then (1974, our freshman year). Being a kid of few words, I took the whole page to write "SLEEPING". I was impressed that I had spelled it correctly without a dictionary but, needless to say I received my first F in her class and it was all down hill from there. Well, as it turns out I must have been correct since I have no idea where the last 30 years have gone yet alone the last 34 years since I wrote that prophetic page. I do know that each day I wake up to a wonderful wife of 20 years ( + 6 year premarital relationship) and our family of three children. Oops, now that I've brought up the family, there goes the "few words" I mentioned earlier. The oldest, Brandyn, our only son, recently graduate high school and is in his first week of marine boot camp. He has been pre-enlisted for the past year while finishing his high school year. Needless to say, he is taking advantage of doing nothing productive this past year except work on relationships with his friends, AKA hanging out. He has worked as a life guard for a local municipality the past two summers therefore has been able to foot the majority of his recreational bill. I thank God that He gave him my wife's intelligence, leadership skills, sense of humor and good looks since I have not been blessed with much of any of those qualities. Our oldest of two daughters is Kayla. She has just graduated from 8th grade. Unlike myself at her age, she is a very articulate individual when she wants to be and no inhibitions to speak her mind when she feels the need to. While she has a large vocabulary she does not always choose to use tact when sharing her thoughts. She can be about as blunt as Gallaghers Sledge-o-matic (now there's a blast from the past). She is the more athletic of the two girls and stays fairly active when she's not sending a text or posting on myspace. Intelligent, artistic, extremely sweet (when she wants to be), and all in all a joy to be around. She has given every indication that she will turn out to be a fine young lady. Our youngest daughter is Julia is 8 years old. What a sweetheart. In many respects, she is a combination of her two siblings, intelligent, fun to be around and loving and caring. While she is not athletically inclined, she does like to be active. She is the girly girl type yet unlike her brother and sister she likes reptiles and has two large lizards in her room. She has her own personality and like her two siblings has given us no reason to believe she will not turn out just fine too. Yes, I love my kids even though at times they can be a total pain in the butt. I'm sure my wife and I were not pains to our parents.;0) Then there is Janet, my wife. What can I say other than this: with all my faults and failures, she still loves me. Truly a blessing from God above. About me, I am working in the construction industry for a city municipality. Shortly after high school I found myself working construction until I had an accident and could not be an efficient hardworking carpenter (NOT A FRAMER). A brief 2 year period in the electronics industry and still a longing for construction, I knew that I needed to get back into it. Apparently I did not burn all my brain cells off and found myself back in school learning much of what I didn¿t want to learn in high school. After a year of remedial type classes ...Expand for more
I was ready for big time and went to ASU and earned my B.S. in Construction Management. This opened up many doors in which eventually lead to the job that I am now working. A job that I truly love (usually). My interests are many therefore I do not devote a lot of my time to any one particular thing. I have learned to (sort of ) play guitar over the years and lead worship for a small group of friends at our church. Don¿t get me wrong, I am not a Holy Roller, bible thumping, turn or burn kind of guy. One may judge a Christian's actions as being ungodly at times therefore they go on thinking they aren¿t going to search for God based on someone else's actions. Go sell God that sales pitch. It is not up to me and my actions to save anyone, I couldn¿t even save myself. It is not about what I've done but rather what He has done. All other arguments about the bible are secondary to that one FACT. Enough said. (ok one last bit: evolution? Just why haven't those monkey's evolved like the rest of us and where are all the stages in between the monkey's and us walking around at. The Geico commercials? Talk about faith in something you can't see. The theory of evolution is just that, a theory.) So onto less volatile topics, lets see, oh I know, how about politics. 8 years ago, I liked my candidate. 4 years ago about all I liked was that he was not the other guy. This year there is clearly no choice at all. I'll be writing in J.C. . The great outdoors is where I like to be. I don't need to do much when I get there but to just sit or walk around and watch and listen. Lately I've been collecting music CD's from our high school era. I gotta say that Rush "2112" and Pink Floyd "The Wall" are timeless. Lately I have been listening to those a lot and others like Boston, Kansas, Bob Seger, Lynard Skynard, Eagles, etc. It makes for a great mental retreat. I have gained a ton of weight since I left high school. To be precise, .04 tons. I have decided to enter a ½ marathon early 2009 and I am now training for that. In the past 6 weeks I have gone from having difficulty walk/jog 3 miles to finishing a 10 mile walk/jog (mostly walk) last weekend in just 3 hours. I know its not great but considering where I started from, I'm pretty happy about the progress. In doing so I have lost .01 tons without changing my diet. The change in diet will come with time, I just didn't want to shock my body by doing both at once. Just the exercise has curbed my appetite. So here it is, published for all to see, "I will be completing a half marathon" (Lord willing). Guess I can't back down now. OK, I can see that I am beginning to ramble on and on and on. Therefore I'll stop now. For all who know me or not and care to, please send me a note. I'd love to have any memory refreshed. Second thought, help me with the good memories, bad ones do not need to be revisited. Take care and God Bless. ------------------------------------- JANUARY 09 As mentioned above, I ran my first 1/2 marathon yesterday and beat my goal by a whopping 20 seconds. I wanted to be less than 3:00 hours and had a time of 2:59:40. Yoo Hoo. It was a great experience though and plan to do it again next year. Health issue kept me from training as much as I wanted to over the last 6 months. Lord willing, I am setting my goal for less than 2 1/2 hours next year. Still pretty slow but still a challenge for me. Our son is a full fledge marine now and loving life. That outlook may change in the near future when he goes to Afganastan this summer. For those who believe, we sure would appreciate your prayers. The rest of the family is doing well and staying healthy too. Untill the next update, take care and God Bless.
