Glen's Story

Hi everyone, After graduation I attended PCC for two years and Cal State LA for one. Since I knew I would not graduate in four years and was unsure of what I wanted to do I decided to enlist in the Army for a job I wanted to do rather than risk getting drafted and landing in a combat role. I ended up working on the psych wards at Ft. Ord Army Hospital. It was something else working on a psych ward while in the military add to everything going on in Monterey (Monterey Pops) and San Fran. (75 miles away) Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, race riots and space travel it was a most interesting time. One of our daily assignments was to pick up the reports from nearby units. I met Betty while she was working as a civilian nurse on the Pediatric Unit. We used to love going there and to the Ob/Nursery as it was an island of sanity in a crazy world. After discharge in 1969 I moved to Connecticut where many of Betty's family still live and we were married soon after. She is one of five so all together we have 27 nieces and nephews, plus too numerous to count grand nieces and nephews, The first several years were a blur as I worked full time at the state hospital and carried a full course load while attending Central Connecticut State College commuting nearly 80 miles per day. Betty worked full time with short breaks to have our three sons; Patrick (1970), Bryan (1973) and Glen Ryan (1975). Thank God for my mother-in-law. When I completed my masters in Special Ed. in 1976 it was Betty's turn to return to school to earn her bachelor's in General Studies and then her masters in Health Care Administration I never did work in Special Ed, instead I became a social worker first in the adolescent service at the state hospital and then for 25 years in child protective services ending as...Expand for more
a social work supervision. After a short period of retirement I went back to work as a part time driver for a car dealership for 10 years finally retiring full time In Jan. 2014. Over the years Betty worked in various capacities in nursing , she loved special care, cardiac care and emergency room care. Her various roles in nursing included serving as Associate Director of Nursing at a 300 bed hospital, director of nursing at two different nursing homes, assistant director of VNA home nursing care and some private duty home care. She is now also retired. When the boys were younger I returned to active membership in the Boy Scouts of America. Over 30 years I served at various times as a Den Leader, Assist. Cub Master, Cub Master, Assist. Scout Master, Scout Master, Unit Commissioner. and District Commissioner and leadership trainer. I backpacked at Philmont Ranch in New Mexico in 1987 and was an Assist. Scout Master at the National Jamboree in 1988. I was elected to the Order of the Arrow, earned the Distinguished Commissioner Award and was fortunate enough to be selected for the Silver Beaver Award. Our son Patrick lives in Portland, Ore. and is completing his Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Dublin, Bryan also lives in Portland and is a long haul truck driver. Our youngest son G.R. passed away in 2011 after battling cancer for 19 months. Some 23 years ago we invited one of sons friends to live with us for a while. Janette ended up staying for six years; she and her husband Zeke live nearby and are considered part of the family. Last but not least is PeeWee our 19 lb. dog who rules the roost and loves to travel with us on vacation. If any of you plan on being in New England please feel free to contact us. We have plenty of room. Glen and Betty Daugherty
