Glen's Story

Well let me start by saying I have been working in IT for the last15 years, and one of my favorite stories I¿ll call ¿Silent Alarm¿. I was working as a Systems / Network Admin for a logistics company that was based in Hayward named Exel. I along with 2 other IT members were setting up new networking equipment in a local office in Burlingame after hours. We drew straws to see who would go pickup our dinner, and I drew the short straw. Now the IT support for that building was one of the 2 other IT people working that evening, and he told me the only safe door to exit out of was the lower level door in the warehouse office. I took off out that door and never heard any bells go off so I assumed he was correct, and proceeded to pick up the food. About 15 mins later I pulled back into the parking lot to find it filled with police cars, officers, and 2 police dogs. I rolled my window down and an officer approached my Land Rover, and asked to see identification. I produced my photo-badge and driver license for identification, then explained that I was doing some network upgrade work with 2 other people. The officer went over the explain to the rest of the police in attendance, and they decided to do an exercise with the police dogs on my 2 co-workers. I called them on my cell phone and told them to come out the warehouse doo...Expand for more
r, and warned them about the police outside. When they came out, one at a time, the dog that was checking them both out was barking and tugging at his leash to the one officers approval. Guns were drawn, and my 2 friends were treated as potential criminals until the exercise was over. The entire time this was going on the other police dog was nuzzling me, and looking for pats and acknowledgement. I put my hand down for him to sniff and he started licking my hand and wagging his tail, so I said ¿hi there fella¿, and the dogs handler noticed that the dog guarding me was now my best friend. The other officers noticed and made some joking remarks to the officer, which she took offense to. The other dog and handler came over to tease her, and his dog came up to me too, with the same thing scene happening again with this 2nd dog. Both officers laughed after a few irritated minutes of looking at each other. I then explained that I had 2 dogs at home, and they must have smelt their scent on me. The truth is I haven¿t met a dog that didn¿t warm up to me pretty quickly, and eventually we all got back to work. The story circulated my work the next few days, and they started calling the Police dog whisperer, which I took as a large complement, because it¿s a well known fact that dogs can sense evil, and that means I passed the test.
