Glenda's Story

I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I hope my friends would remember me as a friendly, fun-loving and good person. To relax, I play the piano, swim in the pool, listen to the sound of the ocean and listen to music I have lived in Brookhaven, Hattiesburg, Jackson and at the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Mississippi. I have also lived in Richardson, Tx, which is a suburb of Dallas, Tinley Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago, Winter Park, Florida and now I live in Casselberry, Florida, a suburb of Orlando. The main reason for all the moves were due to my husband's career. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Beth Allison, because we were good friends in high school. Also, there is a tie as to whom I would love to see again, and that would be Becky Boone Smith. She and I were close friends in high school and college and for many years after we got married to our spouses and had children. They now live in Laguna Beach, California, so it is very difficult to see her much. My obsessions are my grandchildren, Nathan, Nicole, and Nolan Byrd who live in Germany. I have a dog and two cats and I love to read and travel. The biggest surprises in my life, I guess, would be getting to live in Chicago for four years and the biggest of all was ending up in Florida. My biggest family surprise or shock was learning that my husband, Gerald, has Parkinson's Disease. My first year at USM, I lived in Hattiesburg Hall. Then I pledged Kappa Delta sorority and moved into the dorm with all the other sororit...Expand for more
ies. I loved going to ball games. I got married the summer after my sophomore year and my husband and I lived in the apartments for married students. The teacher whom I would love to see again would be Miss Ab, my English teacher my senior year in high school because I loved her and she was one of my favorites. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be very old, senile and some would be dead. I was so completely wrong. I would love to teach again. My first crush and love still lives in Brookhaven with his wife and wonderful family. His initials are L.C. My best friend would tell you I'm a space cadet who has to check into NASA every day, HA, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as friendly and maybe a little ditzy, kind of like what I said above. I share my home with my husband, my youngest daughter, age 24 and my pets., which I find interesting, challenging and fun. If I got to do one thing over, I would have a fourth child, hopefully, another son. I have a son, Cameron, age 37, a daughter, Courtney, age 30 and my youngest daughter, Amanda, age 24. My oldest friend is Ann Slay Joyce, whom I have known since we were toddlers. I consider her my sister. We talk on the phone several times a week even though she lives in Mississippi and I live in Florida. I hope to visit her in Brookhaven again soon. My first job was at Brookhaven Elementary School, where I got paid $5200/yr. to teach second grade. What I remember most about it is how much I loved teaching and how much fun it was to have Don Hemphill as my principal/boss..
