Glenn's Story

I assume most people reading this are from SHS but I hope it will be read by anyone that has known me in my first 53 years of life. It took a lot of guts to write this maybe I am nuts, who'd want to read it? What the heck. It's early Sunday and the coffee is kicking in, enough apologizing...Here goes... At age 16 I regretted moving from Simsbury to Columbus Ohio due to my father's job. To this day when it comes up in conversation I tell people my parents moved there but I found them! Ha Ha! I remember Simsbury as the perfect place for a kid to grow up. I was a paperboy delivering the Hartford Times until we moved. I remember the winters were hard because it snowed a lot back then. My favorite pass time was riding mini bikes from a trail behind my house onto the Ethel Walker Girls School's horse trails. Especially with my good friend Kevin Stone. Who had a better mini bike than me, a Rupp that had shock absorbers. I will always remember those care free summer days riding through the woods and how we freaked when chased by the security men on horseback. Almost got caught but they must have only wanted to scare us! They sure did! I will always remember talking to Karen Ellis too. In high school we talked almost every day! I mentioned this to my sister Karen who reminded me I always made her laugh talking on the phone after dinner. I knew Karen Ellis from Church and was convinced she was the prettiest girl on earth! She says, "I look the same as I did back in High School. Not!" I don't really know. Last time I saw her was 30 years ago. Thanks Kevin and Karen. Wherever you are? I you will always remember you. Real friends of my childhood. You will always mean very much to me. After moving to Ohio I finished HS at Hilliard High. It was such a big change from Simsbury. The idea of living near huge farms never entered my mind until then. But the change did me good. Rounded me off, made me a better person. Mid westerners are more down to earth. Less provincial than the people from New England. I soon learned NYC was not the center of the universe after all. And repeatedly asked why was I faking that accent? They were always straight forward and honest. I always responded well to directness. Anyway... There (Hilliard High) I met Karen Clarkin and Paul Karlsberger. You two are the best, hold my greatest memories. I am very happy to say we are still in contact. Paul, the sensible down to earth guitar player. Never introduced anyone to him that that did not take an immediately liking to him. Your grasp of the French language is rare, a true talent. Karen you were a rascal. I loved you too. I credit you with the reason I waited to get married until I was 39. I will always wonder about what might have been? Oh well...only 12897 characters remaining. After Graduating from Ohio State. Oh that reminds me. I need to go back. Hey Karen Ellis! It was so awesome to see you as a cheerleader for Wisconsin! You were an awesome Cheerleader. Wow! I almost forgot. Sorry I just had to add that in. I was so proud of you! Anyway after graduation I took a job as a recruiter for Colonial life and traveled the North East recruiting sales people. I loved it. Being Single, flying to a different city every week especially since they paid for it! Priceless! That lasted a couple of years then I had to settle either in a Home Office position or open a sales office. Well I did not get the position as Head of recruiting. (I was crushed) But I went into sales management and eventually opened a Distric...Expand for more
t Sales office for Colonial in Cleveland. Westlake to be exact. Two years later the company asked me to move to their head quarters in Columbia South Carolina where I eventually headed up the Recruiting department. But not long after a few years I knew the home office was not for me. I needed more freedom and autonomy. After 4 years I put in for and was granted a transfer back to the field. I wanted to live out west. California was where I dreamed of living. It came true. I accepted a District Managers position in Riverside California, just south of LA (Jan 1994). There I met Dana (my divorced next store neighbor with two adorable kids, Brandon and Cassie). We married two years later. Having a child right away, Aaron. Love you Honey!!! Thanks for putting up with me! That by far is the most admorable thing I could ask from anyone and you deliver everyday. Thanks "BAY BEE!!!!" The company then asked me to open and head up the Los Angeles Brokerage division. We moved 50 miles to LA to a town called La Crescenta. Loved it! But the brokerage division soon closed due to a company merger. I stayed with Colonial and picked up the pieces. Dana came to work for me full time then and we opened another District Office there in Glendale CA. That did not last long, I was offered a promotion and I accepted the postition to head up the Northern California Territory as Territory Manager, a position I hold to this day. I moved to Danville California (east of San Fran ) Loved it too!. There we had our second child Emily. The Two years after settling in the East Bay Area the Territory hit number 1. (2002) A year after that I was again asked to move. This time to a much larger Territory. The Georgia Territory and we moved to Atlanta, Alpharetta to be exact. Dana really did not like it there. Despite more money we put in for a transfer back West. At the time it was good for us and the company so we moved. We moved back to head up the Los Angeles / Nevada Territory. Settling in Glendale California we remodeled a 1922 year old home. The home we bought was owned by the set designer for the TV show ER. Kool! We were loving where we lived again! There I met one of the most interesting people I have ever known. Tim Colceri now one of my best friends. He is an actor best known for his role as the machine gunner in the Staley Kubric movie Full Metal Jacket. "Gets Some!" What a great guy not only to me but to my family as well. Love you Tim you are the best! Well we lived there just over two years until the company made a decision we are not sure was the greatest. They decided to cut/reshape the Territory. They removed Nevada from Los Angeles and added Utah to it. They came to me and asked "what did I prefer?" Stay and work Los Angeles only, or move and take over the new Nevada/Utah Territory. After a lot of thought comparing both markets I chose move to Las Vegas, 3.5 hours from Los Angeles. The year is 2007 and brings us up to date. We live in an area 10 miles from the Strip in an area called Summerlin. Named after Howard Hughes mother's maiden name. There I ride my Harley past Red Rock Canyon. A beatiful desert area. So here I am. Watching my children grow and working as hard as ever. If you are still reading this thanks for hanging in there. I named a few of you but know I have made many friends along the way and did not include a lot of the great folks I have met. Feel free to email or drop me a line. I hope you all are having a great life. I am. All the best to you. Your friend Glenn :)
