Glenn's Story
Life
2004: After graduation from BCHS, I went to the U of I majoring in civil engineering. In 1968 I joined the Army and was sent to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA for a year to learn Russian. I was detailed to the National Security Agency. My first assignment was working with the Air Force on a small island at the very end of the Aleutians. Afterwards I was sent to Germany where I met my wife (a German Citizen). Upon discharge in 1972, I went back to the U of I for a Masters in Civil Engineering and then went to work for the Federal Highway Admin. as a Transportation Planner (serving in Illinois, Colorado, Washington DC, and finally in Kentucky. We have two children, Nicolai, 29 and Elena 27, and one Grandchild, Jackson. I will retire May 3, 2005 and May 4th, I will be on a plane to the South of France to backpack across Spain (600 miles) and complete the trek in about 40 days. My next career will have something to do with Spanish, and I plan to go to Costa Rica to tak...Expand for more
e an extensive course in Spanish. I hope that the time walking across Spain will clarify this point for me.
2014 UPDATE: Well I indeed hiked across Spain the day after retiring in 2005, and have had 4 other hikes in Northern Spain of equal or longer distance since then. We have fallen in love with the Northwest corner of that country (Galicia) that gets so few tourists. I didn't go to Costa Rica, but went to language schools in Mexico several times. I have taught English as a second language to Latinos and have found it very rewarding. I now have 4 grandchildren 2 boys and two girls. All live close enough to visit regularly, especially the boys who are often here after school. It keeps us busy and young. Yes Christa and I are still going strong after 41 years of marriage! I feel very blessed by having found the love of my live, the good health I have had, as well as all the experiences over the years...experiences that I could never have even imagined 50 years ago after graduation.
