Glenn's Story

I remember...Miss Gillespie's English Class when we studied Medieval Lit...Mr. Myers metallic looking green cowboy boots...the seniors sit-in, protesting the dress code...Dutch hops...Clarence's corner popcorn stand...Gene Carara's, "always finish a race mantra"...that German bakery downtown (with the 8 cent cream filled long johns and jelly filled bismarks, I bought four to six of them at the first of every month after getting paid by the Journal Advocate ...the SHS football games, and especially the one where we played Grand Junction, even if we did lose, it was exciting...Doe Boy...Mootsy...Moonlight Madness matching our numbers in the JA so we could win a free window gift!...delivering meds for Hecker's Drug store...yelling "junk it" to a passing car to see what would happen next...mixing cow manure into a can of Skol...when Betsy Sator told us boys to "grow up" in grade school and how we all stuck our tounges out at her,... the Big B's 5 for a dollar hamburgers...the Dash-In Drive In...the day the FBI descended on our local hospital, what was that all about?...hiding in the trunk of somebody's car to get into the Starlight Drive In without paying...working as a busboy and dishwasher at the J&L cafe and realizing that some people really do order "burned toast" on purpose...Bill Venhor's airplane rides...working for Bill and Harry Shuppe and learning how to really make an honest buck...playing endless baseball in that empty field by Mr. Reinhardt's house and barn...the JA paper route number 2 with 122 people that started down 3rd, Delmar, Elwood, and Fairhurst...Randy Wyatt's roller rink...Ralph Ness...Virginia Mackey, my first heart throb at Franklin Elementary...the Spaghetti Suppers and Bazaars...the really bad winter blizzard day that made one of my JA customers named Catherine Hume invite me to a cup of chocolate thinking I was going to freeze to death, she was in my opinion the most beautiful and kindest women on earth...Mrs. Jager's special reading class for really slow readers...Sister Ambrose picking me up by my ears and shaking me, honest it was an accident that I tripped that boy out on the playground....Jim...times when I was less than kind to those around me...the fly-in pancake breakfasts at Carson Field...the ZZ Top at the LC fair grounds...Tim...jolly ol' Wally Post...Jerry Wolever, Bud Bartrum, Mel Bornhoff or Al Miller coming over to talk to John Nicklas about a cattle herd problem...Clay Prall, who taught me that I could ace a math course with effort...Santa Claus in the basement of ...Expand for more
the courthouse...the Easter egg hunt at Columbine park...the Coast-to-Coast hardware store...my kindergarten class at Franklin elementary...the wind blowing for days at a time...Cliff and his barn...Mr. Everett Dawson counting out my papers at the 'ol JA building across from the courthouse... the S & H Greenstamp store where I leaned on a display and broke an entire two rows of glass shelving when I was about 5 or 6...the Ben Frankin 5 and 10,...Woolworths...the day I got stuck alone between floors in an elevator at the old St Benedict's hospital building...the '65 floods...Dr. Paison straightening out my teeth...Larry...playing ping pong in Bob Schell's basement...going shopping at that Ranch Wholesale Supply store...going to visit Neil Winter's dad's Dairy Queen restaurant...Moe Sandstead driving that really long and ridiculous looking station wagon to Ft. Collins with the tennis team; Bill Dowis, Charlie Snyder, Mike Reyner, Greg Mayes, Dave Hoover, and (help me on this one, the guy who broke his collar bone when he fell off of Dave Hoover's car that day, after tennis practice, was it Mike Hoover?)...Mrs. Ott's Geometry class...Vince Unrein, a great under appreciated childhood friend...Mark and the day he flew his brand new plane straight into the ground, it even made a small smoking crater in the grass!...Mrs. Truitt...the beautiful anvil thunderhead clouds on the eastern plains around Sterling...our CYO fundraising booth at the Logan County Fair...Jody...Mr. Norton's "Board of Education" and before going out for wrestling, remembering the surprised look on his face when I asked what tumbling was?!!?...Charlie...Frank Hunter's drive to perfection...Jean Lemmon's great English class...Bill...the day "Penny" from the Sky King TV show visited our post office...looking through the fence from St. Anthony's and wondering about all those kids at Sexton Elementary...the day I got a hold of a brochure for a new Plymouth Barricuda and just dreamed...stuffing ourselves into the corner of the building to keep ourselves warm...the day Tommy Gregor got hit in the head with a bat...Dennis...visiting Dr. Gregor's family compound...Mr. Younger's summer art classes...Sloppy Joe's in SA's cafeteria...being a stage hand for Fiddler on the Roof...all my friends who accepted me in spite of my failings...thinking about "what ever happened to...Carrie Mori...Mary Parks...Martin Diosdado...Jo Bailey...Shanna Sandstead...Stephanie Giacomini...Don Garlow...Ed Kloberdanz...Cecilia Burenheide, visit visadex dot com to let me know.
