Glenn's Story
I worked for Curtis Mathes in 1986. I started with the company doing work in Console Design. At the time I was working for them they were not manufacturing some of their own products but rather were assembling purchased components into television and stereo consoles (i.e.,¿ large¿) entertainment centers.
The picture tubes were from RCA, the chassis from NEC. We did design and manufacture our own cabinets; and installing the components in them was done at out plant in Athens, Texas. They eventually closed most of the assembly plant; around 1991 at which time we could no longer make the claim about the sets being ¿made¿ in the U.S. At that point the company could no longer compete. Another of ...Expand for more
the company¿s problems was that the Japanese manufacturers did not release their latest technology to the U.S. right away, so what Curtis Mathes was selling was always about a year behind the latest Japanese technology. By the way, I was surprised to learn when I did a demographics research of the companies customer base that many of our customers (at least in Dallas) were lower income folks who could not afford the best car in the world or the best houses in the world, but at least were able to rent or make payments on what they perceived to be the best televisions in the world.
These are some of the fun things I did for a living!
Television - Art - Design
I was a designer of Console Televisions for Curtis Mathes back in the good old days of American made Television Sets.
Radio - Production - Engineer
I was a design engineer for Zenith Radio back in the good old days when we made our own Radio's here in the USA.
Fashion - Business - Marketing
I was a manager for Cain Sloan's Department Stores. It was a upscale Department store in Nashville. Back in the day.
