Gordon's Story

Gordon is from McDonough, Georgia. Gordon's schools include Stockbridge High School. Gordon later attended Clayton State University ( Associate of Arts, French, Education), Valdosta State University (Bachelor of Education, Elementary Education, Library Science), Atlanta University (both Masters and Specialist of Library Service) and Nova Southeastern University (Doctor of Education). I began my professional career in 1975-1976 at Beaverbrook Elementary School in Griffin as a 5th and 6th grade teacher and part-time librarian. During 1976-77, I taught fifth grade at Morrow Elementary School in Clayton County. In 1977-78, I transferred to George M. Kilpatrick Elementary School in Jonesboro as library/media specialist. In 1979, I began working part time at Clayton Junior College as the evening and weekend librarian. During my years at Kilpatrick I chaired the School Library Media Program of the Year Committee. The Clayton County Schools were the 1st runners-up for the national title. I continued my daytime duties at Kilpatrick until I was selected to open the new Edwin S. Kemp Elementary School in Hampton in 1983. I continued at Kemp Elementary until 1989. During the 1989-90 school year, I returned home to the Henry County School System and worked as one of the library/media specialists at Henry County Middle School in McDonough. In the spring of 1990 I was selected to open the new Eagle's Landing High School in McDonough. n of Media Assistants. I left ELHS in 2000, when I was asked to open the new Union Grove High School also in McDonough. I remained at UGHS for one year when I transferred to the County Office as Coordinator for Instructional Technology and Library Media Services. I remained in that position for two years until I was selected to open the new Luella High School in 2003. All during this time I continued my part-time employment at Clayton...now Clayton College & State University. If the Spring of 2004, I retired from the school system with 30 years of experience and accepted a position at Clayton as Head of Reference and Instruction. In 2006 I was named Director of the Clayton State University Library and in 2010 I was promoted to Dean of Libraries at Clayton State University, where I continue to work. Fall of 2017 is the beginning of my 43rd year of work in the Georgia Public Education Sector. In 2016 I purchased a house on Talahi Island in Savannah to renovate for my retirement! Coming soon! Gordon currently in McDonough in a house he designed and built in 1997. In 2006, he purchased a cabin in the Ivylog Community near Blairsville, GA. In 2016, he purchased his retirement home in Savannah, GA which he hopes to put to use in the near future. Music Gordon likes includes Neil Diamond, Annie Lennox, Fleetwood Mac. Books Gordon likes include Harry Potter. Movies Gordon likes include The Sound Of Music, Steel Magnolias, Harry Potter. TV shows Gordon likes include Dallas, Jonathan Serrie, P. Allen Smith Gardens.
