Gordon's Story

My darling wife, Joy, and I are looking forward to chillin' again on the beach in Hawaii for a couple of weeks in late September and early October (2023) and then celebrating 52 wonderful years together. (Oct 9/71). It was on the same Hawaii beach some years back that I came across a Classmate's email from George DuWors. So although I had vowed to never social network on-line, I decided it was time to join the profile bandwagon for the sake of the WMCI class of 61-65. Here's the Coles notes life story...flunked out of first year at U of S (but had loads of fun spending Pierre Trudeau's $1,000 student loan) and then got serious, over time completing 2yr education certificate, B.Ed., post-graduate diploma, followed by Masters in Education, with a pinch of doctoral studies in theology. Vocationally, life has been a joy-filled, eclectic journey, serving in senior executive and public service roles in politics/government, education, ministry, and business forums. Presently I'm engaged in doing organizational and fund-raising consulting. Two married sons and three grandchildren. Avid reader in a variety of disciplines - recent biographies included Da Vinci, Augustine, and the most recent on Martin Luther King, Jr. Hair is thinning with mousy grey taking the lead. Serious health scare at age 29 - near fatal case of Crohn's disease. Happily married to Joy, a retired Citizenship Court Judge, Together we waved good bye to Calgary after 25 years (before that 6 in Edmonton, 24 in Regina and rural SK, and my first 19 in Saskatoon), and in the middle of the Covid pandemic relocated to White Rock, the beautiful little "City by the Sea" on BC's west coast, 5 minutes from the US border. We enjoy visiting with our family in Kamloops, and in Kitsilano where our little red-haired, blue-eyed 18 months old granddaughte...Expand for more
r, Mackenzie, has us wrapped around her little fingers. Our walking group of church and community friends saunter the ocean promenade and beach paths 3 mornings a week.. As a couple we're into Uno, Quiddler, Scrabble, good wine, compassion and justice NGO's, watching the Blue Jays, and "forest-bathing together in the late afternoon in the close-by Urban Parks. We are passionately committed to our Christian faith, and I am presently writing a book on "HEAVEN...Finding Your Pathway to Eternity and the Life You Have Always Longed For." Our dear parents on both sides have passed away, along with my 3 University of Regina roommates, and our Border Collie of 14 years. Life is short...my mantra in this 8th decade is: Live slow. Love well. Die happy! You can take the boy out of the gym but you can't take the jock out of the boy...so in recent years I've got quite serious again about personal fitness/health, and working out regularly. Everyone's tank runs low, and when I'm looking for some personal relaxation/renewal I get out my classic poetry books, call up my Spotify playlist, and listen to Bob Dylan, Nora Jones, Leonard Cohen, or some great jazz (try: jazzgrove.com. Best easy listening jazz around). I try and feed my soul each day with a reading or two from the Bible. It would be a delight to reconnect over Starbucks coffee and see some old classmates if you're ever in the White Rock area. If there is another WMCI reunion at year 60, I just may hop on WestJet for Saskatoon. Cheers and blessings from the shy grade nine boy in the 2nd front desk by the blackboard surrounded by Diane, Cheryl and a great class of super kids in Ken Sauer's home room (9A-12A) from Gr 9 through 12. Those were good years...thanks for the wonderful memories! Love to hear from you. Blessings everyone! Gord Dirks
