Gordon's Story

Played football, baseball, Track for 4 years. I couldn't dribble and walk at the same time but could shoot so stayed away from basketball other that being a manager 2 years. Played saxophone in the band from Freshman year through Junior year. I was in Chorus my senior year. Trouble usually found me (and several friends) involved and usually caught. My favorite teachers were: Mr. Swanson (he was intimidating, though), Mr. Landis (always got A's from him), Mr. Baine, Coach Bean, Coach Randleman, and Coach Cook. Went to Grand View College in Des Moines and coached football when they started it in 2007 thru 2014 with offensive line. Also attended Centerville CC until entering the US Army in March, 1967. Became a paratrooper in August '67 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne ":Screaming Eagles". Deployed with them to Vietnam in December, '67, was wounded twice and came home in December, '68. Infantry was no fun at all!! One more in year in the Army at Ft. Bragg, NC with the 82nd Airborne before returning to school at CCC then to Northeast Missouri State University graduating in 1973. I had married Sharon Self in Dec, 1971. Taught history and elementary PE at Hillsboro, MO 15 miles south of St. Louis and coached a defense in football that was rated in the top in St. Louis area. (great kids and a great head coach) . in 1980 I got my first head coaching job and history teaching at Van Buren Comm. School in Keosauqua, IA. They had lost 22 games in a row. The third year there we won 7 and lost 2.. 1985 we moved to Boonville, MO which was a big mistake. Sharon had a great job at the University of Missouri Hospital leading their Lab. I joined her in 1987 working in the Extension office in the Center for Independant Study heading their high school correspondence courses. 1990 saw us move back to Iowa to P...Expand for more
rairie City where my teaching and coaching was the same. Sorry, but beat TC 13-10 for our Homecoming game that first year. The next year PC & Monroe combined to form PCM. The H.S. is in Monroe and the Middle School is in PC right across the street from our house. All of our children graduated from PCM! Sara in 1992, Molly in 1995, and her twin brother, Matt in 1996. Sara was the #1 golfer her Jr. and Sr. years plus an Honor Student, Molly was in basketball and softball, while Matt was an All-State football player as a running back in '95, a wrestler, and #2 sprinter as a Freshman. Sara graduated from Iowa State University in 1996 in Hotel & Restaurant Management, she passed away in 2015 at age 42 and had married a British guy and they had 3 sons: Coady in 2000. They lived in Anita, IA near Atlantic, Declan & Andrew in 2008.Decla is going to England to school this next semester and wants to be lawyer by going to Cambridge. Matt married a girl from Monroe in 1999. They have two children: Jaslyn, 21 and Evan, 16. Jaslyn became a race driver at Knoxville and Evan was All-District running back and linebacker as a Sophomore last season. He plans to go to West Point to play football and become a Special Forces officer. Molly's one child, Cooper is 10 and attends CAM School in Anita, IA. Evan is his role model and has Coop has traveled to Tennessee and Kansas City with the All-Iowa 8th grade team from Des Moines that Evan was a part of. Sharon and I travel to Gulf Shores, AL as do Jim & Lana Dunkin for the month February to relax , play golf and eat seafood. There are a few Knoxville guys that go down there as well. Bob Messmaker & Linda, Mike Cunningham, & Steve Ethel. I have probably missed a few things, but I am glad to join this group and remember the old days at Twin Cedars. God Bless you all!!!
