Gordon's Story
Life
Did 20 years in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. Which really is the Navy. And that really is an acronym for "Never Again Volunteer Yourself". Had a very good tour in Ireland for 3 years. Married a lovely Colleen, Maureen, in '67 and a year later had one daughter. Ireland is a very beautiful country. Every travelogue you've seen about it is true. And in the 3 years, I toured a lot of it. North to south, east to west, and kissed the Blarney stone on the way.
We had an interesting trip back in '76. We were stationed in Morocco, and with another family, drove to Derry City Northern Ireland. Took 5 days and 3 ferry trips one-way, but it was a blast. The real challenge was trying to keep in contact with each other. We took turns leading, and we agreed that if the leader made a wrong turn the follower would follow. It worked pretty well, 'cause we definitely made some wrong turns. Most interesting was the return trip. We left on a ferry from Portsmouth England and landed in Cherbourg France on the coast of Normandy. It was very sobering to stand on deck and look out at the beaches and envision what it might have been like on June 6th, 1944. Quite a sight I bet. Also to see the American cemeteries with their white crosses and stars of David all in perfect rows. It reminded me that most of us in the class of '61 had fathers, and uncles that were no doubt someway involved in this great conflict. It brought tears to my eyes, yet it was a magnificent site.

of years in Morocco, 3 years in Rota Spain, and then on the USS Sunbird in New London CT. Retired in 1981 to Pensacola FL. Still here. Worked a few years for the local Sheriff's Dept. as a corrections officer - that was a trip, then worked for a beltway bandit for 6 years, then opened my own business in 1992. Finally retired retired in 2005. Wife retired in '06.
Have one grandson that was adopted as a baby 12 years ago. He's hell on wheels for this 68 year old to keep up with. But love it! Now we have a almost 3 year old granddaughter - adopted by my daughter. She's beautiful.
Life here in Pensacola is pretty good. Have all the military bennies, plus some pretty good weather - especially in the winter. A few summers ago were a bit weird with all the damn hurricanes. Ivan was especially rough on us in Pensacola in 2004. Then the following year, 2005, we had Cindy, Dennis, Katrina and then Rita. Montana was looking pretty good at the end of the year. Keeping our fingers crossed for the rest of this summer, 2011. So far it's been fairly quiet.
My Dad passed away in the summer of '07, and Mom passed away the day after Christmas in '08. I miss them both dearly. I was fortunate to have them for as long as I did. On October 12th, 2013, my wife of 47 years passed away. I miss her dearly. Her passing was very hard on me and my daughter and we miss her every day.
Well now that I'm retired, the only problem is that when I get up in the morning, I'm already on the job. So, the most difficult thing to do is to decide what time to take my afternoon nap.
