Graham's Story
After graduation I attended Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C. and returned after a year to Columbus to attend the Medical Center/St. Francis School of Radiologic Technology. Two years later, I was a registered technologist and married to my ideal - Bucky Dukes, a lieutenant from South Carolina whom I had met while he was at Benning and on his way to Viet Nam. He was fulfilling college ROTC obligations with a two year stint with the Army. After he returned from Viet Nam and left the Army, he rejoined Milliken & Co. textiles. We settled in LaGrange and subsequently lived in South Georgia and Spartanburg, S.C. before returning to LaGrange where Bucky retired from Milliken as division controller in 2001.
We birthed and raised and thoroughly enjoyed three daughters and a son. I was a fulltime homemaker and, after my first child went to college, I became a feature writer and columnist for the LaGrange Daily News. My most celebrated award cam...Expand for more
e from the Georgia Press Assn. in 1995 when I won first place for humor columns in my newspaper's division.
But none of my writing awards compare with the pleasure I have enjoyed doing home publishing for a family newletter called the "Dukes Digest" which showcases my growing family - now including 7 beautiful grandchildren.
Bucky and I built a retirement home on "the backwaters" outside of Columbus including a mother-in-law's suite for my Mom (now 91 and still perky). My greatest honor in life was to be a kidney donor for Bucky in 2002. What a blessing! However, in 2004, my sweet husband, 61, lost his 30 year battle with diabetes.
Today, I am still living on the lake with my mom and serving as "Mary Poppins" on call for my seven grandchildren. I am active in my little Baptist church, enjoy the beach and the mountains, look forward to traveling this country, and I appreciate this good life I have known which was launched way back at CHS.
