Grant's Story

Life has been fun. It must have been all those days making up stories in Mr. Muse's biology class, but I ended up doing a lot of science writing. After Stadium I atteneded Tacoma Community College for two years and still think it had the best teachers of my college years. It was a blast. I wrote for and then edited the TCC student paper. "The Collegiate Challenge" ;-) To pay my way through TCC I got a job in the library at the Tacoma News Tribune, and then worked my way into being a reporter. Ater TCC I transferred up to the University of Washington, and based on all the writing I'd done for the TNT, was able to get a job as a reporter for the Seattle Times. That was a kick. Graduated from the UW and went to Europe for a while, came back and got a job with the Associated Press, working out of its Seattle Bureau. Became a science and medical writer and a few years later left the AP to write books. Books are good fun - but a lot of work - to write. Books so far include: - "Magic Bullets" (Macmillan, hardback, 1984) a behind the scenes look at medicine and cancer research. - "The Tomorrow Makers" (Macmillan, hardback, 1986; Microsoft Press, paperback, 1987) about artificial intelligence, robotics, and the future of humanity. The American Library Association named it one of the 10 best nonfiction books published in 1987, and the New Yorker magazine ran a brief excerpt. - "New Horizons in Amateur Astronomy" (G.P. Putnam's 1989, paperback). While writing "The Tomorrow Makers" I got int...Expand for more
erested in astronomy and the lives of comet hunters and other passionate amateurs who make big contributions to the science. - "Adventures in Space Simulator" (Microsoft Press, 1994, paperback) about this great game that I watched game makers at Microsoft create. Have been doing a lot of work with Microsoft ever since they published my books, but have also made time for screenwriting. Most recently I just finished writing a young adult novel I'll be sending off to market. (Let me know if you'd like a sneak preview.) Have sailed massively over the years, including some enjoyable ocean passages and races. The coolest voyage I've ever undertaken in life is just getting started: Being a parent. I was driving over to Microsoft for a meeting one day in 1998 and made a classic split-second decision to stop and help with a car that had broken down on the side of the road. It was just on the east side of the Highway 520 floating bridge and I was afraid it might cause an accident. So, philosophically, I was travelling 60 miles an hour down the freeway of life when I made that slit second decision to stop and help. Result was that I ended up marrying the woman a year later. And a year after that, I became a first-time father at age 50. Two years later we were blessed with children again, this time twins. My three girls are now 8, 6, and 6. I've done the math and by the time they graduate from high school I'll be ... even older. But wiser. And so far having kids has sure been fun.
