Grant's Story

Life CDR Grant Morris Civil Engineer Corps, United States Navy Commander Grant Morris was born in April 1963 in Nocona, Texas and raised in Ryan, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS in Industrial Engineering and Management in December 1985. In January 1986 he entered graduate school at OSU and was selected to participate in the Civil Engineer Collegiate program. After graduation in July 1987 with an MS in Industrial Engineering, he attended Officer Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island. In November 1987, Commander Morris was assigned to the Public Works Department, Naval Air Station Memphis, Tennessee as the Facilities Maintenance and Engineering Director. In March 1991, he was detailed as Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, NAS Memphis Field Office, for Southern Engineering Field Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. In January 1992, Commander Morris reported to Public Works Center Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, as Assistant Production Officer. Following the closure of Subic Bay in November 1992, he was selected for the Personnel Exchange Program with the US Air Force and assigned to Headquarters Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. His duties included management of design and construction projects for a $120M Military Construction program to provide facilities for the new C-17 aircraft at Altus AFB, Oklahoma. In January 1995, Commander Morris joined Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FOUR during its deployment to Guantanamo Bay Cuba at the beginning of Operation Sea Signal. as Officer in Charge, Detail Adak, Alaska. In January 1997, he attended graduate school at the University of Texas, where he received an MS in Civil Engineering. In January 1998, he was detailed to the Commander, Navy Region Northeast, Groton, Connecticut, as Facilities Engineer. His primary duties consisted of managing Military Construction and Special Projects programs for five New England Naval installations assigned to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Commander Morris reported to Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia in March 1999 as Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of the BOS contract and Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction. He primarily served as administrative contracting officer for a $25M service contract implementing a new performance based base operating service contract during the transition of contractors. In April of 2000, Commander Morris was assigned as the Civil Engineer Corps LT Detailer at the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN where he served until May of 2003. He next reported to Amphibious Construction Battalion TWO where he was detailed as the Executive Officer from July 2002 to May of 2004. In May 2004, he was assigned to the US Joint Forces Command where he currently serves as the J4 Engineering Operations Officer. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (7 awards), the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal and numerous unit awards. Commander Morris is a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist and Professional Engineer in the State of Oklahoma. He is married to the former Kenda Pemberton of Duncan, Oklahoma. They have four children; Sean, Meghan, Holly, and Amy, who currently reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
