Greg's Story
Life
I basically retired from the real world after high school (it all seemed way too complicated!) and devoted my life to snow skiing, beach volleyball, bicycling, girls and music, not necessarily in that order. I traveled to, lived and was very casually employed in some great places such as Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, St. Thomas, New York, Santa Fe NM, Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara CA and Boulder CO. I had every day of the week off most of my life and would spend it in the sunshine, swimming in the oceans and trying to stay fit while I made pretty good money bartending and waiting tables at night.
I was a singing waiter of all things in Santa Fe for 2 years, sang show tunes every night in front of 150 people and rode a Harley Davidson around the high plains watching lightning storms. I had a chance to audition on Broadway in NYC and won a jazz singing contest that landed me a one-time role on public television. I waited tables and bartended in St. Thomas at a world famous resort called The Hotel 1829 where I waited on a princess, met TV and movie stars and on more than one occasion made over $2,000 in tips on a single night. In Lake Tahoe I skied every day and gambled at night to make rent at 17 years old. In Hawaii I managed seaside restaurants and dated millionaires daughters while trying to improve my surfing skills. In Santa Barbara I started a small music production company called RedStar Productions which came to be known nationally for acous...Expand for more
tic music shows and Open-Mics. I learned how to sound tech and would work large jazz shows and local music events where I've met such people as Kenny Loggins and David Crosby and performed with some incredible yet unknown musicians. In Santa Cruz I became a rated beach volleyball player and designed and built a one-of-a-kind sushi bar called MoBo Sushi which is still a successful restaurant there last time I looked. After the Loma Prieta earthquake in '88 I rebuilt my house from scratch in Corralitos and in '03 I designed a project for a series of high mountain treehouses that are energy efficient and blend into the landscape. I played my guitar a lot over the years and turned my poetry into music as a singer/songwriter and have about 20 original songs.
In '03 I was married for the first time to a wonderful woman I met while singing in Santa Fe. She's an accomplished opera singer and mother of my first child, Aria Grace, born March '04. Just recently I have (mostly!) finished building a home of my own design on some view property near downtown Boulder. Since high school I've seen Sassy Shriver and Sharon Fogelquist, talked to Lynn Nicholas and received emails from Keith Hill, Vickie Brooks, Jeannie Shehan, Greg Hayes, Coach Warden and others. The adventure continues and I'm looking forward to all the rest that life has to offer. My time at YB felt like I was in a big family (Zoria!!) and I think of those days often.
Take care, Greg
