Greg's Story

Life After high school (class of '64) I attended my freshman year of college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I spent the next two years in Brazil as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon), then back to BYU in January, 1968. I met my wife, MarJane Ellison from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, at college in fall of 1968 when we were in the same performing group. We travelled to Central America and the Caribbean on a USO Tour for the military. We saw the first men walk on the moon at a general's home on an Army base in Panama! We were married in January 1970. We moved to Sacramento, California with my first job in 1972, and then to Irvine, California in 1977 where we have lived since. From 1977-82 I was national sales manager for a housewares manufacturing company in Anaheim, CA. Having grown tired of the travel involved and making money for other people, I decided to strike out on my own in 1982. I started in the commercial real estate business selling real estate limited partnership interests for a Los Angeles syndicator. in 1986 I began doing my own syndications and in 1992 I teamed up with a partner and we (with an insitiutional investor) purchased many of the real estate assets from the bankrupcy of an insurance company. In 1997 I refianced that portfolio and turned the management over to a property management company and semi-retired. About the time I became a passive investor in an oil and gas company in Austin, Texas. To make a long story short, I am now the principal owner of that company and spend about ten days a month in Austin (so much for retirement). My wife and I are the proud parents of four children and nine grandchildren. Our married daughter and her husband (a CPA) and their five children live two miles from us in Irvine. ional manager for a large commercial real estate brokerage firm. Our youngest daughter was married in August '07 and is living in Westwood getting her PhD at UCLA. Her husband works for Disney. Our youngest son was married in October '06 and works for an equipment leasing company in Irivine. His wife is a talented artist. We love to travel, both to see children and grandchildren and for fun. I am active on boards of arts organizations in Orange County and the Mormon History Association. I am also active in the Porsche Club--cars being my hobby (or addiction, according to my wife). We are also very involved in our church where we both serve in various lay positions. Well, that's my life since good old FHS. Now that I have joined classmates.com I look forward to catching up with old friends. UPDATE: It's been a decade sine I last wrote on my profile. As with you, lots of changes have happened in my life in the intervening ten years. In 2010, my wife and I moved to Austin, Texas so that I could more effectively manage the oil and gas business I mentioned above,. I sold that company in 2011 and we stayed in Texas whole i was retained as a consultant to the new owners. In 2014, my wife of 44 years passed away after a lengthy illness. She contracted a "super bug" while in the hospital for surgery and spent six months there before passing. I have not remarried. I moved back to California in 2015, and then to Lehi, Utah in 2018. My two daughters, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild live here. My two boys and six grandchildren are still in California, but two of those California kids are here studying at BYU. I bounce bak and forth between Utah and California often. As I'm sure with most of you, my life revolves around them. Life is good, but I can't believe the guy with white hair who looks back at me in the mirror is me! Where have the years gone?!
