Life
Participating in the annual Gate River Run 15K this year as I have the past 3 year's, I realized something that had not registered in my mind for quite sometime. As I started the final 3 mile leg across the 300ft. high Heart Bridge, I looked ahead and seen close to 100 people disappearing over the crest and down the the otherside. For a second it felt like someone hit me between the eye's with a sledge hammer, my body felt like I was dragging sand bag's into a 50 mph headwind, I felt like stopping and walking the rest of way. A million feeling's hit me at one time, the worst was why is a 39 year old man out here running and trying to be competitive? I kept on running despite my sudden feeling of oldness and when I reached the top of the bridge, again, I could see all those in front of me clearer than ever. Then I turned my head and looked behind me at the 7,000 plus runner's I forgot about, yes behind me!! I then realized I was'nt winning but then again, I was winning!! All I can say is after that realization, the sand bag's fell off and the wind suddenly waned...I must have smiled even though I was'nt 18 anymore, I had matured to a better age of 20!!
