Greg's Story

Greg is from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Greg's schools include Northrop High School. Greg later attended Indiana University (Bachelors Finance, Second Degree in Management and Administration) . Greg works(ed) at State Farm. One of Greg's favorite quotes is:""Let us be silent that we may hear the whisper of God" Success To laugh often and much To win the respect of intelligent people To endure the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends To appreciate beauty To find the best in others To leave the world a bit better: Whether by a healthy child A garden patch Or a redeemed social condition To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived This is to have succeeded! Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)". More about Greg:"I am a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana and a Graduate of Wayne High School. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Finance and a second major in Management and Administration from Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business. I have also received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis. During my tenure in local, regional and State Economic Development I also graduated from the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute. Accomplishments have come in the following areas: financial services, city/county economic development, diverse business development, general management, sales training, and key relationship building. I have been recognized as a proactive, customer-driven, multi-tasker, who effectively communicates with a broad range of clientele, from international corporations to local small businesses and individuals. . There are three areas of my career/life that have helped to shape my character and to prepare me for a successful career as a State Farm Agent: First: Vice President of Business Development for Home Federal Bank. I oversaw all retail activity, including mortgage & consumer lending for 73 employees in 9 of 17 branches. I was responsible for approximately 60% of $900 million bank assets. In my tenure there I spearheaded the turnaround of passive focus to one of proactive sales. This turned traditional Bankers, who waited on the customer to enter the door, into a team of sales agents that had weekly calling and production goals and reported on them in weekly sales/training meetings. What did this mean to the Bank, employees, and customers?  Engineered 3 most lucrative years of loan production in history of bank through effective sales training and superior management, achieving all sales goals.  Decreased personnel by 10% while increasing lending production, resulting in cost savings of $700,000.  Led by example, generating 25 business development calls per month, and annual personal production of $5 million in deposits and $2 million in commercial loans.  Dominated Columbus mortgage market, increasing market share to 30% against 54 competitors. Second: my position as Executive Director, Jennings County Economic Development and Chamber of Commerce. When hired there were only 7 other Economic development programs in Indiana. In addition I was the youngest (age) Executive Director of the eight. I started the program by leaving a job with security which included four weeks vacation and benefits. My new position paid 75% of my previous salary; had no benefits or vacation, and the organization had only been able to rai...Expand for more
se 50% of the required budget. My neighbor, the former State Auditor of Indiana, told me it was the “stupidest move I had made in my life”. Two years later we were one of the most well respected and successful Economic Development programs in Indiana. I had pioneered the strategic planning, expansion and management of Jennings County’s economic development efforts. Recruitment efforts attracted various industries; Sonoco Products and Lowe’s to name two, all the while competing with larger cities to attract business. The effort created thousands of jobs, improved the local economy, and provided new jobs and benefits to the citizens of southern Indiana. I turned over every rock possible, exploring grant funding opportunities and conducting various fund raising initiatives putting the organization on a solid financial foundation. I can tell you what I think but this quote says it best: “We are used to dealing with bright, high-energy individuals, but Greg truly stands out…[his] keen insights and tireless efforts proved an enormous help.” Arthur R. Kainz, Lowe’s Companies, Inc. How does this experience enhance my chances for success at State Farm? This experience shows my abilities to take a risk and use my entrepreneurial skills to create a legacy that will help a community and its citizens and my customers realize their dreams. Third: Everybody Counts. This was a program that was conducted by Kiwanis to teach elementary school age children what it was like to be handicap. As a person born with a birth defect I took great pride and effort to present this program across Indiana as often as possible. I learned far more things from the children than they from me but the greatest gift I obtained was the following Poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson on success. This has been my mantra everyday: Success To laugh often and much To win the respect of intelligent people To endure the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends To appreciate beauty To find the best in others To leave the world a bit better: Whether by a healthy child A garden patch Or a redeemed social condition To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived This is to have succeeded! How does this experience enhance my chances for success at State Farm? This daily desire to improve the standard of living and quality of life for all will enable me to assist those with real life decisions in good times and bad. Creating positive memories and experiences utilizing my life experiences and contacts to ensure success!
