Greg's Story

After graduating Centralia HS, attended Centralia JC and worked at Fullers Grocery. Was an Army draftee in Aug '68. During BT signed up an extra year for school as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. I worked with the Navy & Air Force for a while. Later in my career became an Administrator Specialist. The Army issued me a wife (Norma served for 7 years) and our first son "David" was born in Germany. I requested reassignment to Washington but ended up in Washington DC (I didn't know I had to specify STATE). In 1974 I served five years in the Army House Liaison on Capitol Hill as a Liaison between Secretary of the Army and Congressmen, Senators and other high officials. My boss, COL "Scooter" Burke was not only a Metal of Honor recipient but the Vice Pres of the Metal of Honor Society. So I was involved with many Metal of Honor Foundation activities and the POW/MIA. I was honored to be called a friend of John Levito (Vietnam Airman - Metal of Honor Recipient). He worked in the VA Liaison two doors down. Both passed away a few years ago. After serving a year in Korea I was assigned back at the Pentagon for eight years. Served for the Chief of Staff of the Army and Vice Chief of Staff of the Army (ADCSOPS). When Gen Vessey (then the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army) was appointed as the Chairman, JCS he requested me by name to be assigned as his Admin NCOIC; then served with ADM Crowe (who recently passed away). As an additional duty, I set up the first computer system for OCJCS and set up the first Vice Chairman, JCS office. I retired in 1988. Strange and honored that I went full circle that ADM Crowe (Navy) and Gen Herres (AF) retired me from the Army. I took a year off traveling with the family to the Philippines, Japan and various areas state side. Went bac...Expand for more
k to work as a Computer Admin Specialist for 11.5 years at the State Department (Foreign Buildings Operations). I was offerred a number of government positions at the Pentagon but thought I needed to get away from the government. Hard to believe I went back working at the Pentagon for over 8.5 years. I was the Supervisor, Executive Automation/Top-7 providing IT support for the Chairman, JCS and other top offices. Yes, I can say I am one of the 9/11 survivors. I was in that area 15 min prior, and was to go back (separate story for those who are interested). I'm still with L-3 Communications Titan; however, no longer working at the Pentagon. I was reassigned to the Executive Office of the President providing IT support which includes the White House. I still enjoy camping, fishing and golf but do less. Norma & I still travel when we get a chance. Went to Hawaii and Disneyland in 2004; Disney World in 2007; and went on our first cruise May-June 2008 which was the inner passage of Alaska. I enjoy woodworking (Norma still waiting for kitchen cabinets); restoring my '68 Mustang; and have two motorcycles. Norma thought I was going thru midlife crisis when I bought a 2002 Thunderbird (TB Blue) and a Harley 1200 Sportster and recently bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (6.1 Hemi with 425 hp). Our son "David" attended Virginia Tech for four years and then moved back in the house. He is a Manager at a Borders Store. Our other son "Craig" had his own Electician and Contractor business but quit and got a more permanent job with Symantec. February 2008 we became grandparents for the first time. After working at the White House for four months, I decided to retire hopefully for the last time. Hard to believe it's already been a year. Hope to hear those who remember me.
