Greg's Story

I lived in Groton and surrounding areas from 1958 till 1969. Attended William Seely Elementary, West Side Middle School, Fitch Junior and Fitch Senior High schools. I would like to get in on the reunion also. Have not been to one at either high school that I attended. After leaving Ct. in summer of '69 our family made it as far as Florida and I did my senior year there. Mom and Deb returned to Ct in '71. Dad and Lorri stayed in Florida. I continued to travel alot after HS -- 3yr college in Georgia, 3 yrs Army in Germany / Turkey, 1 yr West Va., 3 yrs working construction in Fla., 3 yrs college in Louisianna. Then to Maine in 84, married in 85 and whole lot of experiences since. 3 step daughters all in their 30s, one son, 21 this summer, and 8 grandchildren. Lost their mom/grandma in Dec'01. Filled all that in as a carpenter / contractor working my way from rough framing to finish carpenter and cabinetry maker. I changed careers in '91 and moved into the medical field -- joined the Maine Army National Guard in the 10th Mountain Unit as combat medical specialist; parlayed that into a Certified Nurses Assistant certificate and an Emergency Medical Technician license. I spent 16 yrs as part-time EMT going from Basic to Intermediate to Paramedic. I worked as a CNA in client homes, nursing homes and our local hospital. I moved into primary care in doctors offices, 9 yrs ago, as a Medical/Technical Assistant and handled patient care, blood and lab procedures and alot of paperwork. Five and a half yrs ago I went back to school for my nursing degree. Two years on my core courses (sciences, anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, english and writing), 16 months on a deployment with my Guard unit to Iraq (retired with 23 yrs of service in M...Expand for more
ay'08), and upon return I entered the nursing program. December 2009 I graduated and the 12th of March I will pass my national Nursing boards. I keep walking through those open doors and have had some pretty good times and a few rough moments... That's a big nut shell, I've tried to stay busy. UPDATE OCTOBER 2010 Graduated with my Associate RN in December 2009, State licensed in March and gainfully employed full-time (for the first time in 7 years) in August. I work at a community (of 30.000) hospital in Sanford, Maine as an Emergency Room RN. Loving it, am learning and absorbing like a sponge, and as it is a drive (80 minutes) on a good day, will be moving closer I hope before the snow flies. That was my original plan anyways, was to find the job, and then move closer. I will still be in the country somewhere, not in town, or in a small place. UPDATE September 2015 5 years this August as ER Nurse. Saved a few, lost a few, I always won. Volunteered on HERT, a first responder HAZMAT group. My 5-6? certificate in past 20 yrs as some kind of HAZMAT responder. Been part-time with a nursing agency since 2009. First as a CNA, during nurse school, then as a staffing nurse, different nursing homes or facilities and jobs. Left the hospital fulltime and started with that agency as a Nursing Care Manager in May 2015. Still kept hospital per-diem position, just a lot lest time now. We have 4-5 person office, responsibilities include oversight of 30+ employees as PSS, CNA, CRMA, LPN, RN staffing in 15-18 homes or facilities. 40+ hours office weekly, 24/7 responsibility. Full circle from my first medical job as a small agency CNA in client and nursing homes in 1993. I ain't been in the woods near enough in the past year ...
