Greg's Story
Well, long story. Went to Mount Hood CC for awhile after High School but didn't really know what I wanted to do. Enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970.
After taking all their tests in boot camp they deciced I should work for Naval Intelligence (I Know! an oxymoron! ) So sent me to communications school where I learned to intercept code and analyze message traffic.
Spent 2 years in Okinawa and was offered a chance to go to language school if I'd reenlist so I did. Went to the State Department language school in Va. for the next year studying Arabic.
During my leave before language school, I met a beautiful girl named Janice, in the old "Flower Drum" on Division. We danced and I asked her out. I only had 10 days of leave left, so on the last day I asked her to marry me. She thought I was kidding, but we correponded while I was in school and when I came home in April of 1973 we got married and have stayed that way for 35years now.
We were supposed to go to Cyprus but that got changed and we ended up going to Ft Meade, Md where I worked for NSA for 4 years as an Arabic linguist and communications analyst. During th...Expand for more
is time I spent time in Beirut Lebanon and Athens Greece.
When my Marine Corp enlistment was up, we deciced we needed to get back to the Pacific NW so turned down employment as a civilian at NSA and headed back to Oregon.
Worked for ADP for a couple of years and as a warehouseman for Flemming Foods for awhile until I finally went to work for the Post Office. Spent the last 25 years working for the US Postal Service the last 10 as a Postmaster. Six of them at Government Camp, Or on Mt Hood, and the last 4 as Postmaster of Cascade Locks, Or in the Gorge.
I retired in 2005 and moved to a small 18 1/2 acre farm in Ephrata, Wa where Jan and I spend time gardening and watching the sunset while sipping a good glass of wine.
We travel as much as our budget allows and just returned fro the Cayman islands in March. We've spent a great deal of time in Mexico, as well as Belize and have even gone to the South Pacific, where we spent 2 weeks on Bora Bora. We seem to spend more time planning where to go than we actually do traveling, but I guess that's part of the fun.
Looking forward to the reunion and seeing everyone.
