Greg's Story

Life's been a roller coaster, as I'm sure it has been for most people. I graduated from Monsignor Kelly High School class of 1991. I then went to Lamar University Beaumont for a few years with the goal of becoming a nurse. However, you start taking those horrible prereq's and you wonder, "Do I really want to even go into this field for the rest of my life?" At least I did. So, I took about a year off and got a job working at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont. I figured if I wanted to go into the medical field, that would be the best way for me to determine if I could stand it. I was luckily able to work in the ER where I got a front row seat to as bad as it could get. And, I found out that not only could I tolerate it but, I actually liked it.. I re-enrolled in school at Lamar Port Arthur and got my LVN license. I worked as a nurse for 16 years in almost every area: hospital, surgery, ER, home health, office/insurance, etc. I'd work at a location until it started to get stale and then move on to see and learn more. The bonus was that it also would involve a pay bump. In between that time I got married and it taught me a lot about relationships but, it didn't last. I didn't have any children with her so it made the dissolution of the marriage legally easier. However, she had children ...Expand for more
(whom I'd become close with) but, the "actual" dissolution of the marriage was quite ugly, Jerry Springer'ish would be a good descriptor, and there was no way to maintain contact. After Hurricane Rita hit Beaumont, TX I figured that was my last evacuation, always wondering if you were going to come back to anything. I decided to move up to Sealy, TX (where I currently reside) to live and work on our farm. And, even though it still may get the wind and rain from hurricanes, there is no danger of the storm surge. After my father retired my parents moved from Beaumont to join me up here and it has really been nice. My father and I work together on our farm, continually working to bring its cattle production capability ever higher. I've actually become quite the Agrarian. My father and I are quite close and I can't imagine a better time than being able to spend my days with my dad doing something that we both enjoy. I still do nursing work from time to time to keep my skills up. And, I've also started a news website that I maintain for our county. If any of my fellow classmates would like to reach out, don't hesitate. And, if you're ever passing through Sealy, TX look up Austin County News Online.com and give it a call. It will be me that answers and we can get together. It'll be great to catch up!
