Greg's Story

Updated May 2, 2010. After graduation, went to MTSU, majored in Math, minors in Computer Science and Physics. Met Donna there. On graduation, moved to Ft. Worth, TX. Worked on the F-16, F-22 and other aircraft no one has heard of. While there, Donna and I kept things going long distance and married in June of 89. She was, is and always will be the love of my life. In October of '91, we moved to Montgomery, AL to get closer to home. We were there fourteen years. We had two kids while while living in Montgomery. Our son, Parker, in Jan '93 and our daughter, Cara, in Dec '94. Moved to Dayton, OH four years ago. I got restless; needed new scenery and new challenges. We will try to stay here till both kids get in college. After that, all bets are off. I'm thinking Colorado Springs, CO or Ogden, CO. Lately, I'm waffling on this. If we have a long-term contract, we might stay till I can retire. Planning to retire in March of 2019. Might teach school for a few years. Might piddle around with dogs and guns. All this assumes that we continue recovering from this recession. I guess, surprising no one that knew me well in high school, I enjoy shooting, hunting, martial arts and dogs. I shot trap while in college, made the state team a couple of times, finished 12th in the country at the 1981 Collegiate Championships, but, overall, was never a force. Converted to skeet when I graduated. Was eventually ranked in the top 100 in the world. I quit when we had kids. Not fair to them or Donna to drag everyone out of town every other weekend for my hobby. Learned from my mom that, having brought kids into the world, they come *first*. After skeet, I had an excess of energy :) and took up aikido. Spent 12 wonderful years training. The last 5, I was teaching but that too got in the way of family life. So, I left town to get away from it. Drastic, but necessary. Kids come first. I hope to return to aikido after the kids are on their own, but I'll be 51 by then and I don't know if the old bones will take it. Somewhere while in aikido, I took up competitive pointing dog activities. I have two and still train every week when circumstances allow and compete when it makes sense. It's something my wife and I enjoy doing together. Since moving to Ohio, I've started shooting benchrest. "Varmint For Score", if anyone cares. It's something that my son and I can do together. I'm going to try to shoot 10 matches if I can shoehorn it in around the kids' lacrosse, which is going full steam right now. Have I mentioned that the kids come first? ;) My son is now 17 and a s...Expand for more
ophomore. He plays lacrosse pretty much year round. He plays defense on the varsity team at Springboro High School. He also plays both indoor and outdoor "development" leagues when not in season. He is about 5'11" and 155 lbs. So, he weighs more as a sophomore than I did when I graduated...and none of his friends joke that he's built like a razor blade :). He is incredibly social, has tons of friends and is seldom without a girl friend. We are alike in a love of technical and computer "stuff". He is going great guns in an IT program at his school. There has been a halo effect on all his classes adn he has nothing less than a B. My daughter is now 15 and a freshman. She, thank God, looks like her mother. If she were taller, she would be model material. She is an attack wing on the SHS women's lacrosse team. She starts some of the time which, as a freshman and a first-year player, is a big deal. She scored TWO goals and had an assist in her most recent game. She's a year ahead in math and French and in "College Prep" in all her classes. She's a *monster* reader. This week she told me that someone has "asked her out" that she likes. That means they're, to use an old term, going steady. She has talked about being a veterinarian and a dermatologist. I'll support whatever she wants to do other than depend on a guy to provide for her. I've been remiss in not describing my lovely wife Donna. She is a 1980 graduate of Glenncliff HS after attending Saint Edwards Catholic in elementary and junior high. We met at MTSU...in a math lab that I was teaching. ;) We married in 1989. It has not always been a bed of roses...but, truthfully, it almost always has been. She tolerates me ;), we balance each others' shortcomings and she even likes my sarcastic sense of humor. We enjoy dog activites together, visiting friends, the kids' activities and cooking. I cook the main course on the grill 3 or 4 days a week till the snow piles up on the deck. She does the veggies and the kids now have cleanup duty. Donna supports IT at a hospital in Montgomery, AL. She kept the job when we moved to Ohio and is a 100% telecommuter. It's been huge for us. We can now follow my career anywhere she can get cell service and a high-speed internet connection. She really likes her job and it's going great. Donna and I are both big readers. She reads John Grishom and romances. I read Tom Clancy (not so much in the past few years), W.E.B. Griffin, John Ringo, David Drake, Jerry Pournelle and that ilk. That is, the military historical fiction and military science fiction genres. Greg J.
