Greg's Story
Enlisted Navy 7-11-1963. RTC Great Lakes Co. 292. NATTU ABF "A" school in Philly & Bayonne. Stationed U.S. Naval Air Station (Leeward Point airfield) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba then aboard the flight deck of USS Forrestal CVA-59 in the Atlantic, Caribbean and the MED.
Navy service gave me a great liberal arts education, exposing me to twelve unique countries, principalities, territories and cultures. From eighteen to twenty years of age I enjoyed extended visits to Barcelona, Spain; St. Paul de Vence, Cannes, Grasse, Gulf Juan, Toulon and Nice, France; Monaco; Monte Carlo; Genoa, Naples and Taranto, Italy; Athens and Piraeus, Greece; Beirut, Lebanon; Valletta, Sliema, Malta; Palma de Mallorca, Majorca; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Heady stuff for a young kid!
Some memorable historic anecdotes include proudly marching amid a sea of dress whites into Soldier Field, Chicago on 08-31-1963 for a Bears exhibition game. Arriving GITMO 02-15-1964 just after Fidel had the base water supply cut off forever. Playing tag with Soviet frigates and aircraft from Gibraltar to Beirut and back. Briefly anchoring off the beach of Palomares, Spain on 03-15-1966 as the U.S. struggled to find her lost H-bomb from the depths nearby. Fun fact: It was found two days later by the 2-man civilian crew of Alvin (DSV-2) at a depth of 2,550 feet. Not as otherwise portrayed by Hollywood! Just sayin'.
Shout out to ALL veterans of any service in any era that signed up, showed up, and manned up the watch.

heavy lifting and certainly paid the price. Especially the wounded and those who made the ultimate sacrifice including our twelve honored Blair schoolmates from the Class's of 1958 through 1969 in the Vietnam era. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You are not forgotten! "HAND SALUTE! READY, TWO!".

As it relates to Blair, I think we lived through an amazing era in the early 60's, wrapped in innocence in a then great city and very proud school with special, accomplished people and fun times until history came calling.
Everyone has an interesting life story and pictures worth sharing. Why not share yours herein? If not, then what's the point of belonging to this website? Just a thought.
If you ever visit the Virginia Beach oceanfront, look me up. I'll likely be sitting in an easy chair at water's edge, catching some rays and watching the waves roll in.
Best wishes to ALL Blairites past, present and future.
