Gregory's Story

Life I am a fortunate man. My life after high school has been truly a blessing. I have a wonderful family, my parents, Charlie and Marybeth lived on Antrim Court for many years. Sadly, my Dad passed away July 9, 2006. His smile, personality, wisdom and love have left an indelible mark on me. I have terrific siblings, five brothers and one sister, and all are fine. Just months before graduating from Ohio State University, I met my wife. Kim and I have been married 43 years, and have two children, Lauren and Ben. Our daughter is a graduate of the nursing school at Wright State and our son is a chemical engineering graduate of Miami (Ohio) . Kim is a registered dietitian and had worked at hospitals here in Springfield, Ohio for a number of years. She also worked at a rehab/elderly care facility for 11 years before retiring in May 2020. Our daughter works at Bethany Retirement Center in Centerville. She and her longtime beau, Ben, are now married (6/23/07). We had ourselves a great party. They presented us with our first grandchild, Faith Elizabeth 10/4/12, her mother's 29th birthday. Lauren and her husband gave us another grandchild, this time a boy, Gabriel Kenneth, on 3/31/16. He's doing great! Our son, Ben is working as a chemical engineer for Solvay Chemical and has lived in Baton Rouge, Baltimore, Philadelphia and now is living in Houston for his third time there. I pursued a career in television and radio, which is what I wanted to do from the time I was a kid. I worked as an advertising sales representative for Time Warner Cable and a couple of previous cable companies in Dayton for 11 years. After college, I worked in various radio jobs in the Dayton and Columbus area. I returned to radio in January '06 and work at AM 1290 and 95.7 FM WHIO in Dayton as an account manager. It is a news/talk station and a good fit for me at this stage of my career. I retiredin late 2017 after 41+ years doing what I love. I hope those of you who chose to read this are doing well. I think of those days at Deer Park from time to time. Even though life has its peaks and valleys, I hope you have found joy in your lives. I recently was highly fortunate to discover a malignant tumor in my kidney. I say that because IT WAS DIVINE INTERVENTION at Christmas time. I had surgery in January, 2013 to remove my left kidney, and so far the cancer has not reappeared.. I have spent time with Mark Hanauer over the years. We exchange Christmas cards with the John Bools family. A group of us had "A Night a...Expand for more
t The Chicken" a while back. Organized by George Demas, Mssrs. Baynes, Taylor, Dean, Pfohl, along with my grade school buddy Mark Amorini were on hand for the festivities. We called Gregg Ashorn in North Carolina from the event. It was great. My wife and I visited Gregg and his family in Farmville, N.C in July 07. We went into town and had some BBQ and shared some memories. They were just great to us. Gregg was enshrined in the DP Hall of Fame in 2015. That was nice to see. He and Jay Mulcahy both had remarkable high school basketball coaching careers, as did Larry Sporing. Getting together with some other great folks from the class of '71 in Montgomery one evening was also great fun. Gene Zackerman and his wife Val, the remarkable Doe (Darlene Davis) Zitscher, my dear friend Diane Cunningham Redden, those lovely Stadtlander ladies, Joan Bishop and Janet Brayton, the delightful Sue McCullough and of course the extraordinary Sheila Wolf. The 2009 multi-class reunion at Dan Bachman's farm was great, couldn't come to the 2011 event because my wife and I were on a mission trip in Mexico. On February 6, 2010, Kim and I attended an event called the Deer Park "Players with Pride", honoring Tom Griswold. It was fun, saw many old friends and my wife, who has known the Griswolds since childhood through church, had a great time. Sadly, all of us lost Mr. Griswold. The event held at Crawford Auditorium upon Tom's passing in January 2016 was remarkable. There were some incredible reminders on how Deer Park truly gave us a wonderful start to our life path, and how Our Lord and Saviour always is with us. Being a St. Saviour student through eighth grade, then coming to Deer Park High was quite a change, however it really set up my life. The many wonderful things that needed to happen for me, did, largely because of my time at DPHS. if you have not seen all the vast improvements at the high school building, you really need to stop by. Chris Rumpke Huster gave Ed Baynes, Jack Dean and my wife and me a tour after Mr. Griswold's service. Chris should be congratulated along with all those alumni who have walked through the time and changes at Deer Park over all these years I look forward to whatever the future brings, because I really have had a wonderful life thus far. Take care and blessings to you. It was awesome to watch the Wildcats win the state D3 basketball tourney, got to four tournament games with my brothers, the only undefeated team in Ohio! Very impressive. All the very best, Greg
