Gregory's Story

After leaving Milne I went to SUNY Plattsburgh for my BA in biology, then took off for a few years to play a lot of tennis and just take it easy. I then went to Florida State University for a PhD in biology. The 4 years at FSU turned me into a diehard lifelong FSU fan and a fan of living in the south. But after graduating from FSU I have lived in many places, starting with postdoctoral study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, then faculty positions at medical schools in Charleston SC (Medical University of SC) and Columbus OH (Ohio State). Again longing for the south, in 2000 I moved to Raleigh NC, an area of the country I had always thought would be a great place to live. I started a new phase in my professional life, accepting a position at North Carolina Central University in Durham to help the school develop their biomedical sciences research infrastructure. In December 2019 I stepped down as Chair of the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences and currently serve as the Director of the Integrated Biosciences PhD program, and spend the rest of my time teaching and doing research. etal alcohol exposure on nervous system development and adolescent behavior, using a zebrafish model for the disease. We also now study the effects of cannabis on these functions, with our recent research showing that alcohol and marijuana share a common mechanism to impair the fetal nervous system. Thus, pregnant women are especially at risk if using both alcohol and cannabis. We were pleased to have this research receive substantial media coverage in 2019, in Newsweek, Popular Science and a host of other media publications. My wife Aura Pacheco, a nurse anesthetist, and I continue to live in Raleigh NC. My son Zack is now 25 and decided to graduate from College in the middle of a pandemic, hence few job prospects! My son Ben is 21 and a junior at Appalachian State with a major in mass communication and journalism. My stepson Logan is 24 and in the Navy. We maintain our sanity by having a massive garden in our backyard, hiking 25 or so miles a week, biking the >50 miles of greenway in Raleigh, and looking forward to post-pandemic travel for our annual vacation to Italy. And still no retirement in the future for me! One advantage of tenure and being a college faculty.
