Gregory's Story

Did you ever watch Touched by an Angel? It was one of my favorite TV programs. I often fantasize about an Angel miraculously solving all of my problems: Late at night I am struggling over the illegible parent's Pink Copy of my son's special education plan. I am preparing for another session with the teachers, therapists and school administrators that comprise Steven's Individualized Educational Program team. I wondered why they are called a team, since the word means people working together for a common goal; and so far I have observed little cooperative behavior. It finally made sense when I realized there were actually two teams and their team outnumbered mine! And the paperwork! It is hard enough to comprehend the byzantine special education plan; but attempting to read the tome is like deciphering a secret code written in disappearing ink. One comment described my son's classroom experience as either learning well or living hell. I suspect the latter was intended. Back to work, I wonder if my splitting headache is the early stage of a brain tumor. Suddenly the room is plunged into darkness. The light returns again and blinds me. Then the light alternately appears and disappears like rapid-fire lightning strikes. Steven, stop playing with the light switch, now!" Turning back to the paperwork, I run my fingertips over the mysterious manuscript in a naturalistic Braille attempt to unlock its secrets. Again a maddening explosion of light fills the room. Recovering from my temporary blindness, I bellow: Steven, I mean it. Stop playing with the light switch! But Steven is not there. Instead, I find myself gazing upon the most beautiful being I have ever seen. W-Who are you? I am an Angel. I have been sent by God to bring you a message. Oh, praise the Lord. My prayers have been answered! All those Sunday mornings I serious...Expand for more
ly considered getting up early to go to church are finally being rewarded. Dear Angel, you don't know what this means to me! My time here on earth is of necessity brief, and I have an important message for you. Yes! My salvation has come at last. After all these years of dragging my son to specialists who described my son in their gobbledygook language; yet never said anything helpful. And sitting in those munchkin-sized chairs and enduring the dispassionate itemization of my son's problems. How I detested their jargon-laden speeches. I understand. You have been sorely tested. However ... Tested? You don't know the half of it! The worst part is that sanctimonious school district administrator. He always has a ready explanation why every suggestion I make can't be implemented. I am afraid there is a misunderstanding. Huh? A misunderstanding? You are here in answer to my prayers, right? Aren't you going to perform a miracle and make all my problems go away? I am very sorry, but I am not here for you. I have been sent to earth in response to the school administrator's prayers. What!!! The school administrator? What on earth does he need an Angel for? Mercy, please. The man has prayed for salvation from you. The message I bring is to please have pity and compassion for him. In his prayers, he said his life has become a living hell since meeting you. You're his Angel? But what about my son? For years I have done everything possible to help him. I've attended so many meetings and conferences. I've consulted with dozens of specialists. I've read hundreds of books and articles. I've lost countless hours of sleep and I've cried gallons of tears. I've devoted my life to getting my son the help he needs. Tell me, when will my son get an Angel? Ah, but your son already has an Angel. What? My son has an Angel? Who? You.
