Gregory's Story
Life
Shortly after graduation I enlisted in the Navy where I spent the next 20 year, retiring on my birthday July 31, 1991. My naval career took me to over 22 countries around the world. After retirement I secured a position with a Defense Contractor in the Washington DC area where I stayed until June of 1997. I returned to California to aide my ailing mother, she passed in February 1998, where I secured a position working as Clinic Services Officer in an Indian Health Clinic in Tuolumne, California, just outside of Sonora. As all things happen, budget cuts cost me my jobs so moved to Red Bluff, California where again I secured a position as a Supervisor with Tehama County Public Health. In 2008 I contracted my first of 4 different Cancers and was forced to leave Public Health, due to illness. I was unable to return to fulll time work so found myself twilling my thumbs and sold my 50-acre ranch and moved to Redding. Retirement didn't last too long as I got involved with Anderson Veterans of Foreign Wars where I elected as Junior Vice Commander and then later two and a half terms as the Post Commander. During that period, I also became the District 8, VFW Commander charged with responsibility of 8 VFW Posts in the North State. I've backed off a little as I was again elected Post Adjutant position where I've remained for two years.
I've had an interesting life and have met new friends throughout the world as a result of my travels.
I enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from OHS and after attending a year at Butte College in July 1971. I've traveled the world, compliments of the U.S. Navy, actually visiting 22 different countries while attached to USS Enterprise, USS Kitty Hawk and USS Carl Vinson. I've lived in California, Washington, Wa...Expand for more
shington, DC, Northern Virginia where I was assigned to the Joint Special Operations Agency and then later to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff J-3 Special Operations Division. In 1989 I was assigned to Joint Task Force Middle East and served USS LaSalle in Manama, Bahrain. My last tour of duty was with the Bureau of Naval Personnel where I retired from the Navy in July 1991.
After Navy Retirement I secured a position with a Defense Ctheontractor in Alexandria, Virginia. Returned to California in February 1996 after having been hired by an Indian Medical Clinic in Tuolumne, CA (just up the hill from Sonora, CA). While living in Sonora I threw my hat into the political ring where was elected to the Tuolumne City Park and Recreation District while also appointed/elected as District Administrator for Little League District 15. In 2005 I moved to Red Bluff where I secured a position as a Supervisor in the Tahama County Public Health Department and later moved to Redding California. I retired in 2006 as a result of Cancer and am now happy to say that I am Cancer Free after undergoing a Bone Marrow Transplant in February 2012. I was elected to the position of Commander VFW Post 9650, Anderson CA in 2018 and will remain in that position until July 2020. I was also elected/appointed to the Staff of the new California District 8 VFW as the District 8 Senior Vice Commander.
I am very much involved with the Anderson VFW and was recently elected to the position of Commander of the Post.
I have two children, Kathy who is an Associate Professor at Butte Junior College and at the same time a Social Worker working in the Oroville Hospital. My son, Greg Jr., is a long hall truck driver and manages to come home and visit for about a week every 5 weeks.
