Gregory's Story

Won't be back to NJ for the reunion but here is a what has happened since SPFHS... I went to Rutgers getting a BS in Environmental Science and a commission as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force. With a #21 in the draft lottery the question of going on active duty became moot. I spent 7 yrs in the AF as an Electronics Systems Officer working with electronic warfare and radar bombing systems. I was stationed in MS, NY, KS, ME and lastly Shreveport, LA. It was interesting and always challenging and got me interesting in engineering things. I left the AF as a Captain and used my savings and the GI bill to go back to grad school. I ended up in Chicago for grad school since they would give me a research assistant job and forego out of state tuition. I had met my "wife to be" in the AF where she was a Finance Officer and after 6 trips to visit her during her 2 year assignment in Germany we married in 1981. We took advantage of the trips and traveled widely thru Europe from Italy to Norway and even got to go into East Berlin while still under Soviet control. Melinda's military assignments kept us apart for the first 2 yrs of our marriage... she tells me they were the best years so far! Since 1983 we have lived in Southern California from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Melinda got her MBA after leaving active duty and worked as a Finance Director for several defense and biotech companies. She stayed on in the AF Reserve and retired as a Lt. Colonel. My grad school research was into synthetic blood materials and since then I have worked for medical device companies as an engineer, manager and Director of Research & Development departments. I moved around in different medical fields including ophthalmology, general surgery, oral surgery and cardiology with Johnson & Johnson, Baxter Healthcare and Bausch & Lomb among others. I have several patents in medical devices and have enjoyed the inventive part of this work and seeing these devices used in surgical procedures to help people. The work required a good deal of US and international travel which we could sometimes tie into vacations so we got to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau as well as several more tr...Expand for more
ips to Europe. As the travel load rose from 30% to 50% of my time I decided to try something different and 6 yrs ago became a partner in a small medical engineering consultancy. It was a great move and has been a refreshing change. Melinda decided to retire early at 50 in 2005 and we sold our Orange County house and moved to a smaller place in San Diego County. I also began reducing my work load to part time and we have been able to carve out periods for long distance RV trips around North America. Our longest was a 10,000 mile journey up to Alaska and across dirt mountain roads into the Yukon where we then did a 500 mile round trip on dirt roads up to the Arctic Circle. We have also done a coss country trip back to NJ and several trips to Oregon, Idaho & Montana. Got interested in trout fishing and have taken advantage of these trips to fish many western trout rivers, lots of fun! We still have many trips in mind for the west. No kids but we are committed dog owners and now on our 2nd pair of dogs from rescue agencies, a Golden mix and an Aussie Shepard. The Aussie is diabetic (yes insulin shots 2x a day!) and developed cataracts and we had them removed and surgically placed intraocular lenses to restore her vision. Interestingly the surgical technology used was some I helped develop for people in the 1980s that was a kind of a nice payback. We have pretty much been outdoor oriented here. We have both been scuba divers, mountian bikers, hikers, done a little golf, tennis, skeet shooting and archery. Lots of camping in tents, VW campers and now a small RV. Love finding wildlife on trips and I still do a bit of photography... digital is great! We both use some of our free time in recent years for community service activities helping with our city disaster preparation (we get big wildfires out here each fall) and cancer volunteer groups. We have just started a backyard veggie & fruit garden and who knows, as the stock market is going, may soon be bartering tomatoes for gas! P.S. I am not a gold member with classmates so do not see who has signed in visiting here just e-mail me if you wish per the SPFHS reunion listing. Regards everyone!
