Gretchen's Story
Life
My Spouse
I met Mark up at Colorado State University. I was an Exercise and Sport Science Major studying to be a physical educator during my years at CSU. Mark played football for the school. We would frequently run into each other at Moby Gym. We also had mutual friends that sealed our relationship. We have been married for 25 years.
My Kids
Luke is a special needs child. Born 3 months premature, he has overcome a number of life threatening obstacles. Luke has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and has significant developmental delays. In spite of his early life struggles, he is the happiest 20 year old I know. He has taught me how to be a better parent, physical educator and person. He is my hero. My second son, Jackson was born 14 and a half years ago. He too, was premature by two months, but has no physical and developmental repercussions, thank goodness. It is like being a first time parent having Jackson. He too is a delight and a great joy in my life.
My Job
I taught both Health and Physical Education to Middle school age kids (6th-8th grade) in Evergreen, CO. I am presently a CNA at PASCO a home health agency that provides services for the elderly and disabled. It has been a privilege to work in this field for the past 12 years. Thankfully my job allows me to be at home and serve as Luke's private CNA. As much as I loved teaching, I am afraid I missed my calling and should have gone into Nursing. So much of my adult life has been dedicated to caring for others. My Mother passed away this past Christmas from Parkinson's disease and my Father is currently battling Alzheimer's.
Workplace
After finally graduating from CSU (I took a year off to work in the Grand Tetons National Park) I got a degree in Exercise/Sport Science with a teaching concentration grades K-12. I worked at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. at the onsite newborn-Kindergarten childcare facility. There I was a P.E. coordinator working with infants-school age children. After moving back to CO. and marrying my husband, a CO. native, I subbed and worked ...Expand for more
in the Littleton Public School District as an Elementary Physical Educator for 2 years. I then moved onto the Jefferson County Public School District and taught P.E. at the secondary level for 6 years( 2 years at Oberon Middle and 4 years at Evergreen Middle). I am currently a stay-at-home mom taking care of my two sons, Luke (6) and Jackson (8 mo.) My oldest son is a special needs child and requires a lot of care so I decided to put my teaching career on hold. Now that I have another child, I am waiting for my youngest to be in school full day before entering back into the work force.
After much deliberation,I decided to leave education altogether which was a tough decision but circumstances with Luke left me no choice. I have been fortunate enough to get my CNA licensure and have been actively working for PASCO Home Health Agency for the past 10 years. Luke is now 17 years old and Jackson is now 11 years old. I have often thought that I missed my calling and should have gone into nursing...as both my sons have required a great deal of attention to health care. Jackson luckily is doing well in spite of his severe asthma. Luke is and will continue to be a medically fragile child but he has the BEST attitude. It is difficult to see him as anything other than a blessing. He has befriended the Resource Officer at his High School, Moose Chavez. Moose happens to be a Lakewood SWAT police officer as well. They have been participating in 5 and 10K marathons together. Their goal is to participate in the Boston Marathon the spring after Luke turns 18. Their next race will be the Rock-n-Roll Marathon taking place on October 19th, 2014....which just happens to be Mark and my 23rd anniversary. Jackson keeps us busy year round with football, basketball and baseball.
I know that everything happens for a reason. I am grateful for my present friends and those from my past that have helped shape me into the person I am today.. I am looking forward to next week where I will be reuniting with Joy (Bonnevier) Chytraus...30 years! Hard to believe it has been that long.
